Hello all! I just found this site and am really excited to hopefully be able to gather a little bit of information from people who know what they are talking about. I am 23 and have just accepted a job on St. John at the St. John Inn. I will be heading down there the beginning of October and am very anxious about what to expect. I guess my questions are never ending, but I have done much research on and about the island. I'm just wondering if ya'll could tell me about some more of the local stuff. I will be looking for an afternoon/evening/weekend job at mabe a bar or restaurant? Are there very many people down there my age? Is it easy to get around the island with no car? I was going to look into getting a bike when i get there so we will see. Also how does grocery shopping work, what kinds of items will i have to go to St. Thomas to get?

Thank you all so much, and information is helpful!

Em

It's a little hilly for bike rides. Do you mean you're looking for a job in addition to the job you have at St. John Inn? You can find anything you'll need for day to day living right on STJ but when you do come to STT you might want to stock up on basics since it's usually cheaper than on STJ. You should find friends your age but remember, it's expensive down here so save as much as you can before you come down. Good luck!

In order to get that p/t job at a bar or restaurant, you will need to get a health card. I just got mine on STT at a lab and the hospital last month. It's kind of a pain in the neck, and I'm not sure where you will have to go on STJ for it, but it requires a stool sample. It costs about $46.

Good luck!

How long did it take you to get your health card? An yes Trade I will be done daily at 2 pm so I will be looking for a restaurant job preferably for afternoons, evenings and weekends. Thank you both so much for your comments! Anything else? I would appreciate it!

ps- Any cute guys on the island?

Here's a previous thread on health cards. I'm assuming you'd have to get it on St. Thomas unless somebody knows for sure they can do it on STJ.

Lots of young people on stj for the season. Shop on stt for your staples and dry/canned/shampoo/etc goods. stj grocery stores are VERY expensive. If you live in town you should be able to get by without a car on stj. Stj is very hilly, a bike would only be good if you have hanz and fraz legs.
