Moving in October to STX
I am relocation to STX in October and I have been reading over the message board and it seems like there are many helpful people out that are willing to help the newcomers so I do appreciate any advice and suggestions. A lot of my questions have been answered by reading other posts but I had a couple that I can't seem to find. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.
1) I see that Sprint offers service there, does anyone know if you can keep the same plan you had in the states or if it's different and how?
2) I've heard that if you ship a vehicle over you can hire someone to get all the paperwork in order for you when it arrives. Seems like a bit of a hassel and lots of running around to get everything in order.
3) I am a young professional, under 30. single male coming from Texas. Is there any kind of dating scene? Anything for younger people, night life?
4) I'm not a millionaire nor am I near the poverty line. I make a decent salary and I would consider myself middle class, is it possible to have a decent life without living paycheck to paycheck. I enjoy diving and it seems like a hobby I would like to do more if it's not too expensive.
5) Is it benificial to invest in a condo? Live in it for couple years then turn around and rent it out if and when I eventually leave?
On the vehicle, you just pick it up at the port from the shipper, go to Sunny Isle and pay the road tax, then go to the DMV and get an inspection and obtain registration, sticker, and license plates. It's very easy to do. Good luck! We just shipped a new vehicle down from Miami and completed this in about 3 hours. No one else had to do anything.
If you want someone to do the vehicle, I had someone do my first one but would do it myself now, I would suggest using Flemming to transport and do the paperwork.
I would rent for at least several months or a year before deciding whether to buy and where. Right now condos are a buyers market, meaning there are LOTS of them for sale and many more for rent. Not a good investment at this time since you are already seeing you exit from the island. IMHO
Do look into the condo fees that may skew your decision - investigate recent additional assessments and planned future ones - some condo fees almost exceed the rental value.
The best suggestion is to rent for at least 6 mo. to get a better personal feeling for the areas you may want to live in.

Can't give you specifics about Sprint but why don't you contact their Customer service Department directly and ask them.

Yes, you can hire someone to do all the paperwork. You just have to decide if that's something you are willing to pay for or save that money and do it yourself.

Sorry, I'm much too old for the dating scene but like anywhere else there are lots of young singles who get together over drinks, food and music. Once you are here you'll have no difficulty finding people your own age.
4) I'm not a millionaire nor am I near the poverty line. I make a decent salary and I would consider myself middle class, is it possible to have a decent life without living paycheck to paycheck. I enjoy diving and it seems like a hobby I would like to do more if it's not too expensive.
It depends on your lifestyle. Without knowing your salary, where you'll be living, it's hard to say whether or not you'll have enough to take up hobbies like diving. As a general rule living expenses in the Caribbean are often higher then they are back on the US mainland and wages for comparable jobs are lower so factor that into your budget calculations to determine how much you'll need to live comfortably. In other words, if you have enough discretionary spending money where you now live you'll need perhaps 20% to 30% more earnings to maintain the same lifestyle down here.
5) Is it benificial to invest in a condo? Live in it for couple years then turn around and rent it out if and when I eventually leave?
Don't look at the condo as an investment but rather as a place to live. If you decide to leave you can hopefully sell it at a profit or , as you say, rent it out. You may or may not make a profit. If you do all well and good. If not, you'll have had a decent place to live while you were here.
Good luck with your relocation.
Thank you all for your advice. I look forward to coming down there and starting anew. If I come up with any more questions I'll post them. Thanks again.
moving there from ct next week. I'm sure we'll have plenty of info for brand new people from brand new people soon
SPRINT -
We have the same plan that we had in the states, no changes required.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but my experiences keep getting better and easier at the DMV! 🙂
I have used Sprint for the last 5 yeras. Same plan, no problem. Summers in Chicago and winters in STX. Also use the sprint hot spot.
Lived in STX for 2 years. The cost of living is way more than you are used to.
Crime is rampant...even if it is just among the Crucians, you just don't want to be in the way of a stray bullet!
Life there is not all beautiful beaches and sunsets.
Glad to be back in the US!
