hi
are you glad to be moving here? there are always taxis to get you to the divi but your best bet would be to buy a used car i imagine it would be cheaper in the long run. dont know about the pay for dealers, they actually called me for dealer training but i am on a temp assignment at the divi for another department and could not take the position at this time. i doubt you will make as much as you would in vegas??
there are other people on this board who can enlighten you on rental costs.
food is more expensive here, i think electricity is more. gas is about the same.
ask more questions so that you will get answers directly related to your needs.
good luck and have fun
ps driving on the "wrong" side of the road is not that bad.

use the "search" feature to get info on your questions regarding shipping, apartments, cars etc... be sure to specify "all dates" and it will search years of postings and probably most of your same questions have been answered before
You can also switch boards and look at the classifieds on here and you will find tons of cars and apt which will give you an idea of what to expect.

First off the casino in not anywhere near Christainsted!! I also don't believe there are many less expensive places to stay on the East rend near the casino, but I may be wrong.
We are returning today from a two month split between STX and Mesa, AZ. Where are you in AZ?

First of all. most of your questions have been answered on this forum in great detail. Go to the SEARCH function put in relocation forum, then all dates and then your topic.(transportation, working at Divi, rentals, cost of living, etc)

The first thing that you need to know is that it is much more expensive to live on St Croix than in the states. Public transportation is very bad, so you will need a car (an older 'island car' will cost $3000 or more) but it will be cheaper than long term taxi use.. Housing (including utilities) will probably cost about $800 to$1200 a month, even if you share. Living here is very, very different than in the states. The Divi is out on the southeast shore (about 10 miles from Christiansted) and there is very little housing nearby. The best you might hope for is a shared apartment that is downstairs from a house.

I hope some of the people who have worked at Divi will respond to give you a better idea of working conditions.

Hi,
I sent you an email in response to your apartment inquiry. Hope you found it helpful. Did the casino not tell you what they would be paying you? Tips are pretty lame from what I see. We go out to the casino about 4 or 5 times a years, so I'm no expert, but the players don't seem to tip like I have seen in other destinations. Are you an experienced dealer? If not, you will get the slow shifts to start. You really should have some back up money to get through the start up and the first few months.

We have had a couple of casino employees live in our apartments. They did "OK" with the commute. Not the best, but certainly doable, particularly for a short term, until you find something closer. You will need a car, not optional from anywhere on STX, if commuting to the casino.

Good luck to you.

You really should come down here first for at least a week. The Casino and Divi Hotel is very removed from town, basically taking a drive past rolling hills and "bush" and I think you would need a car, because taxis get expensive back and forth. Then you would have more options on where to stay. A single person can rent a studio or 1 bedroom cottage for around $970 (plus $100 per month for electric and then paying for cistern water, which is about $300 every 3-4 months if there is no rain) This is just my personal experience. I have seen less expensive advertised in the paper, I guess it depends on your comfort level. Then you have food costs. You probably should have an in-person interview at the casino and get the details, if you can.

alecia: This is a bulletin board. You ask, people answer here, you read it, get suggestions, other people may also learn. That is the way it works! 😉 And BTW, it is NOT a dry heat here. 😀
