Moving Cars to VI

Hello,

I'll be relocating to St. Thomas in a few months from the mainland. The kind people who interviewed and hired me for my new job there told me repeatedly that I should plan on bringing my car with me, but that on top of the other moving expenses may be more than I can afford. It is a good Japanese car more than ten years old, so apparently the import tax won't be too terrible. If you've done this, how was your experience? Was it worth it?

I'll be working downtown but have yet to find an apartment. I'd like to live somewhere quiet rather than next to a nightclub. But when I move there I may have to buy some big things like a table...how easy is it to get around, and to have things moved for you? Is it possible to live somewhere rather and peaceful but not need a car to commute to work?

Thanks in advance...

There are those who live in the town area and work there, that don't have a car and do exist. Groceries will be a problem as the major grocery stores are in the outlying areas. Beaches and movie theaters too. But if you are just coming to work for a season, you may not need it. There are places you can rent in the town area, especially for the short termers like you.

Hey Ronnie,
Thanks for the info. I will in fact be a long-termer as I have a job with the government. It sounds like I probably should bring the car?!

it isnt that difficult to bring it down, and you can sell it for as much as you have into it once it's here if you do decide to leave.
both crowley and tropical do weekly shipments, crowley seemed to be nicer to me as a first-timer [though it may have just been the secretary on that day]... they both have websites and online quotes.
it takes a little bit of cash and a full day in st thomas with taxes and customs and the like, but it's wroth it to have the car once youre here. especially in st thomas, it opens up your possibilities to many of the other areas of the island, where rentals are nicer and cheaper and safer [northside, etc]
email if you have any questions

Not sure if you made any final decisions yet, but we just brought a car down for the summer. It was cheaper than renting all summer and including the shipping costs and taxes, we can sell it for more when we leave. They have a very captive market here, and think a lot of their used cars. I suggest you ship yours, since it's an import the taxes are higher, but it is relative to yoour option of buying here. We used Crowley's to ship and then were referred to KJ 's Courier Service via this msg board. He dealt with getting the car, clearing customs, paid the taxes and got it all registered, washed and gassed up for us. Considering the fact that the computers were down when he went to get it registered and he had to go back, his $150. fee was a bargain. It wasn't worth us wasting our time, especially since we didn't know where to go etc.

Good luck to you.
