Moving and grooving!
USVI community - please help me in my move since I will soon be your grateful neighbor!
CAR - Can you reccomend any shipping companies? Is it cheapest to drive the car to Miami and ship it? It's a '99 Chevy Cavalier - anyone know how much that might cost or what the customs tax is? Can you ship items in your car or does it cost a lot more depending on weight?
BOAT - What's the shuttle/ boat trip like from ST.T to PR? Cost? Time? Does it run often?
DOCTORS - Do people have to go to PR for routine, affordable (insurance covered) healthcare?
HOUSING - Do landlords require year leases usually? Can you recommend a nice and safe (but not overly expensive) area to live?
SHOPPING - What are store and restaurant hours typically? Can you find clothing on St. Thomas or is it cheaper and better selection in San Juan? Is it really expensive to ship Internet purchases to ourselves in St. T?
MOSQUITOS - Are they epidemic or just a pain? Do you need any vaccinations?
WEIGHT LOSS - Can someone please help me starve myself to fit into a bikini on my new island home?!!!
Thanks in advance! 🙂
Nicole,
Most of these questions are answered on other parts of this website. Please spend a little time reading them, then come back with a couple of unanswered questions.
Thanks.
The boat only runs from STT to PR every other week... flying is the commonly used mode of transportation around here.
MOSQUITOS are just pain not an epidemic.
BOAT does not run often as DL said I think it is every other week.
DOCTORS no we dont have to go to San Juan to get routin healthcare. There are some good doctors on the Island. We will usually go to San Juan or the States for something like a major surgery or something like that. And again its not everyone will do that. Lots of people just their Island Doctors.
CAR go through managed freight. I forgot the number to them but I think the website is managedfreight.com. I know the man name was Lee. They are pretty good in getting the car shipped and taking car of the run around for you. Also you can ship some stuff in the car. That wont be a problem.
Hello,
You might want to read through this site more closely and also the sister site www.vinow.com just for information although its more vacation oriented. Also you might order some print material.. books... try www.vitraders.com and click on Planning in the navigation.
CAR - Search for a recent thread by Steve N. he discusses the cost of shipping a car. At the top of this board there is a Search Option.
The taxes you can find on this web site at
https://www.vimovingcenter.com/car/
and

for Moving Help.
BOAT - Check the ferry section for details

DOCTORS - No, take a look at the yellow pages, doctors
www.viphonebook.com
HOUSING - Some landlords require leases and some do not. If they do its usually 6 months or a year. They usually require first months, last month and a security deposit.
SHOPPING - Typical store hours.... no 24 hour stores like some mainland towns/cities. Usually open time is between 8-10am and closing around 6pm to 10pm ... depends on store type, location, market.... You can find cloths, but not a big variety. San Juan has more malls and outlets. The USVI gets federal US mail so if you can get something shipped to you then you can use USPS at the same going rate as state to state. If you use some of the other mail carriers then some of them list the USVI as international and so $$.
MOSQUITOS - Just a pest.
WEIGHT LOSS - There are several gyms on island.
