Moving..
I know everyone seems to ask these questions, but my boyfriend and I are looking to move to the islands some time near the middle of August. Since I am so anal, I want to have everything figured out real soon!
What is the best way to go about finding an apartment and job listings? We don't need anything big for an apartment a 1 or 2 bedroom would be great! My boyfriend is looking for a job in business (ie:marketing, financial stuff....).
How difficult is it to get jobs/apartments when you are not on the island? And does anyone have a recommendation as to which island we should aim to live on? Public transportation and safety are big concerns to us.
Thanks for the info!
Brooke
Well, decide which island and get your info about the different choices of islands and then the rest of the questions can be answered. Each island is very different in it's advantages and disadvantages so trying to answer questionslike jobs and housing before you know which island you are going to live on is like putting your pants on before your underwear.
Order a Settlers Handbook if you have not already, it will help with your indecision as to which island, you can read about each island what they each offer and decide which best suits what you are looking for. Order from http://www.vitraders.com
Best way to find an apartment - On St. Thomas and St. Croix the newspapers will help and St. John word of month and bulletins... St. Thomas and St. Croix you can also find through word of mouth but there are many more apartments so the newspapers have classifieds - you will find a few St. John in the paper too however much more competitive market.
Jobs - depends on the island. Business private industry jobs, St. Thomas and St. Croix...
Hard to find apartments without being on island, you need to look at them to see if its what you want... so you will need to stay in an inn or small hotel for a week or so till you find a place.
Public Transportation - is not very reliable. St. Croix is very spread out and I would say requires a car to get around, grocery, enjoy the island.... St. Thomas you can get by with public transporation and $1 safaris if you live somewhere on the bus route and work on the bus route otherwise you will be walking or depending on people you meet to help you out with rides.
