So I spent many, many months reading this board, soaking up all the information, spent ALOT of time getting excellent advice (especially from Chris), and finally made the move . My wife, twin daughters (under 2 years old), and I moved to St. John last week. Within 5 days we:
1) Found a place to live
2) Got a job (at least I did)
3) Bought and registered two cars
4) Got a telephone line in our apartment
5) Got internet access
6) Got cable TV
7) Made a trip to St. Thomas on the ferry to stock up on bulk stuff at the Cost-U-Less and K-Mart
8) Met alot of really nice people who all are very excited to have us on the island

I figured that if I do it with twin babies, anyone can!!

We are excited about our new life here in paradise. St. John is a beautiful island.

Pete

Ok Pete, even I am jealous!
How did you get a pad on STJ?!
We would love to live there (and commute to STT), but just assumed rental housing was impossible.
Welcome to the VI and we look forward to hearing about your new life on STJ.

Fantastic, great good luck in your new home! I am hoping to pull of the same thing and heh, it's only me a single 62 year old that is not ready for the rocker but is collecting a Social Security check each month. I too hope to find a place to live there on St.John as well as to find part-time work.

This message board has been working great for me too - hope to meet you all one day soon.

Hey Pete!
Congratulations on your move- I am so happy everything has worked out for you all.
I land on Island this Saturday - and I'll need to find a car right away- what was the process you went through, and how much did you spend roughly? Any info would be great- Thank you so much!

Hi Rochelle...

Regarding buying a car...I had heard that rental companies cannot legally rent a car that is older than 5 years. So I went around to a number of car rental agencies asking if they had any 1998 cars to sell. The rental fleet is generally in good shape. The cars are well maintained, and are driven by (usually) timid tourists who are freaked out by driving on the left side of the road and arent aloud to take their cars on many dirt roads. I ended up buying from Paris Car Rental, which is actually a Hertz affiliate. I never met Paris himself, but had a lovely time chatting with Patsy, Troy, and Joanne.

Regarding housing...It was definately a stroke of luck finding the place we did. it's in Pastory, a mile outside of Cruz Bay. The apartment was advertised on the bulletin board at the Starfish Market in the Marketplace. You can also find ads posted in the Mail Center (at the Marketplace) and of course at Connections.

Good luck and if you have any other questions let me know.

Pete

Pete:

Thank you for all the great information. I am moving in December and my main concern is finding work. Would you mind letting me know how you were able to find employment. Thank you again!

I got a job at the Westin...I got in touch with them back in April, then came down for an informal interview in May. Then I kept in touch with them over the summer so when I arrived last week, I had alot of ground covered. I definately recommend coming down first to scout things out, meet people, pass out your resume, etc.

Jeff,

Lots of folks post that they get nervous when moving is around the corner - so you are not alone. 🙂 All the best on your move.

Hi Pete:

Congratulations on your move!!!

My husband, myself and our two boys 3 and 6 are also moving to St. John soon. We were hoping to be there by the end of this month but are waiting to sell our home here first. I may come down to rent something in October anyway as I hear after that rentals are hard to come by. We are very anxious to get to St. John. We were considering shipping our vehicles...but it sounds like it was pretty easy for you to find a vehicle.

Congratulations on your job also. The Westin is a beautiful resort.

If you hear of anybody looking to rent a house or apt. to a family (long term), please let me know. I would really appreciate it. Realistically we probably won't be getting there until December but if I have to rent sooner I will consider it.

Thank you.
Colleen
