Motorcycle on island
Does anyone have any thoughts on using a motorcycle for transportation on the island?
I'm on STX ..........but here are just a few reasons my bike is still in the states
......my driveway............potholes.......gravel......rust.........trash trucks........cement trucks......alcohol infused drivers...... ..and rust deserves another mention..........
To add to flounder's list. No full time neurosurgeon and safari drivers who think that their half of the road is negotiable, especially on blind curves.
my biggest problem with my bike is so far I have only found one mechanic and to say hes not reliable would be an understatement. I dont think the roads on stx are bad for a bike, we do not have the steep roads that stj has or the horrible traffic of stt. Oh and you will need a mechanic if you cannot fix your bike yourself because it breaks down much faster then they do stateside.
Now, for another viewpoint:
I don't even OWN a car...only two bikes (My Harley, which I drive as often as I can, as she's my baby...and My Honda Rebel which is my 'work' bike). I love being on a bike on these islands. I live on STT, and I never have to deal with traffic...never have a problem parking...never have to pay more than 9 bucks to fill the tank (and I can drive the Honda of 10 days on that!!...The Pirate Bike uses up that same $9 in two days! Ugh!). You'll learn a new way of driving bikes in the VI. The roads are as slippery as ice after the rain...the other drivers don't look out for you AT ALL (sometimes it seems as if they are aiming for you!), the curves are not the kind that you really wanna lean into so much, it rains everyday, so you WILL get wet, drinking is the territory past-time, so you may find that you have to leave the bike and cab it home alot (I never did...and it's a freakin' miracle that I am still alive!), grocery shopping is something I have to do everyday, as I can only fit so much into my backpack, lugging the trash out to the dumpster is a drag...I mean, yeah, there are downsides, too, but, when I weigh the up vs. the down...I never regret being a biker. Of course, I've had one since I was 8 years old, so maybe that clouds my view a bit...and , granted, I'm a mechanic...but, who owns a bike and doesn't know how to fix it? If you do...well, you're not really a biker, anyway...just a rider, right? For me, 2 wheels beats a cage anyday of the week...or week-end!!
I'm sure that nobody really needs to hear my opinion, but all I can say is that while we were on the island, we were glad that we did not have our Harley. We bought a little island beater (car), one that didn't matter if it got dinged up.
However, I had a friend who drove around in a scooter and believed that that was the only way to go.
