Mell, if I see you in Pueblo's lot panhandling I'll know you went to Riise's once too often. 🙂

Just thought of something. After the last 2 bad hurricanes I thought too that there were more crooks down here - people ripping off FEMA or ridiculous reconstruction prices & jacked up consumer good prices (although new laws helped some with that) until I heard from friends in Florida who STILL haven't gotten their homes fixed & the terrible rip-offs they suffered after the storms they got hit with.

Trade to die from alcoholism is a very slow process for most people. Ending in a variety of chronic diseases. Much like smoking is, only I find alcoholics much harder to take. How do you get arrested for being drunk in the usvi? The jails would be over following. The only way you get a DUI here is if you crash. Like I said before I know many highly functioning alcoholics, I'm sure other people do here as well. They drink every night but find their way to work. Will there liver last past 60? Probably not. I do not think alcoholism is a major problem here, there are other much bigger problems here, but it never helps build healthy strong individuals.

Mell-Some in the medical community think one 6oz glass of red wine is good for the heart. I've never heard of any doctor saying suggesting that alcohol in any other form would be good for you or lead to any longevity.

If you'd like the best results from your Bailey's and Godiva here's the recipe:

Chill a Martini glass and decorate the inside with chocolate syrup

Pour:
1 1/2 oz Grey Goose VANILLA Vodka
3/4 oz Godiva and
3/4 oz Baileys
into a shaker filled with ice

SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE
strain it into your chilled martini glass and sprinkle some GOOD shaved chocolate on top

My recipe for a GREAT chocolate martini

Alright Joe!!!! Thanks!!!! Sounds wonderful!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

And speaking of old movies......Now that I have this great recipe in hand and considering it's Friday, this could end up being a real-life version of "The Lost Weekend."

"After the last 2 bad hurricanes I thought too that there were more crooks down here - people ripping off FEMA or ridiculous reconstruction prices..."

Don't forget the wonderful Cruzian chief of police during Hurricane Hugo, who also was recently a senator, who also shot his unarmed son to death in cold blood in his back yard, Adelbert Brian, was arrested by the FBI for looting building materials right after Hugo.

Of course he has been acquitted of all charges ever brought against him.

Absolutely correct, Noone & don't forget ex-Senator Chucky who gave out over $200K food to her constituents in STX after Marilyn. I don't think the grocer ever got paid.

Betty, I need no lessons in alcoholism. It's been 33 years since I've had a drink. 😉

Betty said, "Like I said before I know many highly functioning alcoholics, I'm sure other people do here as well. They drink every night but find their way to work. Will there liver last past 60? Probably not."

Poll: Should someone who ruins their liver due to behavioral choices be entitled to a transplant of a scarce organ?

I've read all the posts thus far and would answer original poster Jennifer as follows.

Before I moved to the Virgin Islands over two decades ago I lived both small-town and city life both in the U.S. and in England and met diverse characters over many years.

The Virgin Islands have always been a haven of sorts for criminals, con artists and general misfits. I've encountered more amoral people here than I'd ever have thought possible. Amoral people can be very intimidating. They're basically people who have no moral conscience. Trying to reason with them is futile because although the gift of the gab comes easily to them, their promises are empty because they're devoid of a moral conscience which, to the majority of humans, is an inherent trait. They also don't commit outright crimes. They cheat and lie with equanimity both in their private and business lives but their charm carries them through for the most part and they all too often do extremely well financially by stepping over both people and institutions for a very long time.

Wanted criminals easily made a home here in years past and lived simple lives. Technological advances both have found and continue to find them when they either commit a crime here or attempt to exit the USVI but there obviously are still too many loopholes.

There are also many who arrive here every year who, although they may not have warrants out for for their arrest, do have long records. They can get employment because employers are generally lax about checking references...

Last but not least, the multitude which comes here with stars in their eyes looking to wash away all the troubles of a personal nature which they have "back home" and who believe that moving to the Caribbean will wash away everything.

Yes, Jennifer, there are many shady and sketchy people here. I don't think you have much to worry about really. If a homeless person tries to catch your eye then avoid him or her. If you're pursued by a homeless person, either duck into a store to call the police or, if there is no place around to duck into, act crazy yourself. Whirl your arms around, spout gibberish about jumbies and God...

Maybe you do attract these people. Lord knows I seem to from time to time! Cheers!

Well said, STT Resident.

"Poll: Should someone who ruins their liver due to behavioral choices be entitled to a transplant of a scarce organ?"

I think I have a personal interest in this, as my father died when he was 48, on the island. His death certificate says, "Death due to internal hemorrhaging, due to cirrhosis of the liver, due to acute alcoholism."

I do not believe someone who kills their liver deserves to get another; at least over someone who has a non-self-inflicted destroyed liver.

that saying originated in Coral Bay, STJ. That's what I was told, but don't know the history behind it.
