As I enjoyed the quiet relaxation of the beach at Emerald Beach Resort today a truck delivered a half dozen 500 cc Kawasaki jetskis for the new rental concession at the Hotel - seems like another peaceful place to spend time will be invaded by the loud roar of people riding on rented personal watercraft and has gone by the wayside - who approves the permitting of these concessions? DPNR maybe?- it will certainly limit the swim area and make snorkeling more of an adventure as well as intrude on the natural serenity.

Yea that's a bad accident waiting to happen. Not to mention potential harm to wildlife. 🙁

They've had jet skis before, but they were closer to the little park. They didn't go near the beach area, and the concession didn't last long. I don't know of any here that intrude on the beach areas. They usually head out to sea.

I see them at Rainbow Beach, they aren't ever closer than 100-200 meters to the edge of the water (beach, unless they are slowly comming in to anchor them) & the sound is not noticable at all.

They might scare fish a bit, but aside from that I can't see them being a terrible thing, seems pretty low impact to me.

From where I live, above Dorothea Bay, I can hear them from the next bay over which is Neltjeberg. Sometimes, if wind is blowing right, Hull Bay and sometimes their Sunday hideaway music, too. They (jet-ski's) are incredibly loud. Can't they make them with quiet engines?

Years ago I looked at a house in Misgunst to purchase which had gorgeous Magens Bay views but between the boom boxes and the jet ski noise coming up the hillside from the beach, decided that I did not wish to be forced to listen to that type of noise constantly.
I do love quiet but I don't mind birds, crickets, coqui's and branches and leaves rustling in the wind and yes, even the green parakeets squawking, is preferable to man made noise. Except for those darned roosters, that is.

I think if your above the ocean you'll definately hear them, on the beach not so much..

yes they could make them quieter, just need more muffling (at a sacrifice to power,)

This is exactly why every gun I own has a Suppresor to go with it, its the same reason I have a 24" muffler on my truck... some people just don't consider it rude to spill noise polution all over ( light polution also...)

Well, Emerald Beach has done a phenomenal job of marketing themselves to the cruise ship crowd. I suspect someone wants to make some extra money off them. There was a successful campaign against them in the marine sanctuary (now called STEER- St Thomas East End Reserve), but I think the rest of the island is in trouble. (td)

We had some friend on from AZ last week on carnival ship. Told them to have the cab take to brewers but they ended up on emerald. It was PACKED with cruisers (ship towels). A friend told me there is huge elkhorn colonies off to the right of emerald? Haven't checked that out, always go to the right. Is that where they're doing these rentals?

The new jetski operation is being run by Emerald beach Hotel itself -- it is to the left as you face the water - behind the current swim buoy line - yesterday the competing operation way down on the right, by the playground had 2 young men on jetskis going up and down the whole beach approaching anyone in the water soliciting business, skirting the swim buoy section by inches - looks like a jetski war will ensue - and it certainly is loud and noticeable on the beach [liquid fluoride] .
There is some very nice snorkeling all along the rocks on the left side, just past the new jetskis and a lot of turtle action during the spring and summer - last year they had a Leatherback nest but mostly they are Green Turtles in the Bay. Some large Southern Rays are common sights, great conch beds and I have seen the occasional Dolphin pod.
I have never tried snorkeling on the right hand side but will give it a good look this week.

I was at Rainbow Beach all day yesterday. The jet skis were being used on a regular basis but I never heard one or saw one cause any disruption to the folks in the water.

I'd like to have a few myself.
