Mopeds and Scooters!
HI! I'm moving to St. Thomas to go to UVI and I won't be able to afford a car! Does anyone have any information on mopeds and scooters? I read that some of the roads are too steep and curvy for scooters. Is that true?? around the University?? Are there many places to buy a moped or scooter?? Thanks so much!
Amy: I call scooter drivers "patients!" 😉 The roads are narrow and the taxi vans believe their half of the road is in the middle. Add sudden rains to make the roads slippery, potholes that would cripple and elephant and drivers don't consider other vehicles. And to top it off, there is no neurosurgeon on island and currently only one orthopedic surgeon. You are safer in a car or taking a safari.
Ah EE you big kill joy. We have a friend who lived on STJ and now on STT who drove a scooter, well at least on STJ and not sure if she still does on STT.
She called us a couple of weeks ago so for someone who's been doing it for about three years.....she is
a. Stupid, which we know she isn't
or
b Just plain lucky
I definitely wouldn't do it.
Ha..well that's good to know:) Thanks guys! What are my chances of finding a CHEAP car while I'm down there?...I'll only be on the island for about 9 months...so i'm just looking for something that will get me by for a little while!
Driving on two wheels here is quite different than it is in America, but with a little patience, caution and common sense, it can be done just fine. I've lived here for almost 9 years and I drive my Harley or my Honda everyday. My wife owns a Jeep, but she's always driving that. Yeah, I get wet alot, but I also get 70 MPG on the Honda! And I don't have traffic problems or parking problems, either! To each his own, I always say. If you want o get a scooter when you get here, figure about $1,500. That gets you a rock solid, almost brand new model.
