Is Rattan Montessori the only one out there? I'm trying to make my child's school decision but I cannot get anyone on the phone. Thanks.

there is also one in Golden Rock and I see a new add for a new Star Apple Montesorri school on island. Word on island is Rattan is the place to be. I've enrolled mine there for this year. If you decide on Rattan, drop me a pm and introduce yourself. We'll meet there eventually.

Thanks aqua, I saw them on the web but I cannot get anyone on the phone to make sure she has all her medical information. Is she going to need the usual Universal Health Care form & shot record? I'm taking her to the dr's stateside so I want to make sure I have all my bases covered.

I believe you will need to have your childs school physical done here. I had my sons physical done in the states and his school would not accept it so I had to have another done here. Most insurances will only pay for one physical a year. If anyone has had a different experience please post about it.

That's good to know. Well at least they can't make me do the shots over, are there any good pediatricians out there? Just curious Doug, what was the reasoning for making you getting another physical for your son?

It's Tammy. I haven't a clue other than here you have to have a stool sample and lab work. When I asked can't you just transfer the information to the new schools form, they said no. I also had difficulty transferring the school physical done here on island from one school to another. Each school has their own form. I asked for a copy from the doctor to take to the new school and they said it was on the wrong form. I had to go to the new school get their form bring it back to the doctor for them to fill out. The doctors here also require you to go and get lab work done yourself. You have to take your childs' stool sample to the lab and get the blood work done there as well. Afterwards they will forward the results to your doctor. You also have to be very specific here and ask questions. No one volunteers information. Sometimes you have to take deep breaths and be very patient.

new2, I don't know about the physical being done stateside vs local. But, i do know that the Rattan folks are on vacation. That's probably why they don't answer. I have the medical forms they require at home and can fax them to you if you have a number for me. At least you can look at the forms until you do get someone to answer.

Update: I just ran into a friend who told me that Good Hope School accepted their sons stateside physical. Last year Good Hope did not accept mine so maybe the policy has changed.

St. Croix Montessori is the name of the one in Golden Rock (just west of Christiansted... I went to the open house there and the facility is fabulous. The head guide (teacher)... Ms. Sullivan... has been teaching Montessori method on island for years at several of the other schools and they seem to be really good. The Rattan school I have not been to but I don't think the facility is nearly as nice. I'd check them both out before making a decision..and meet with the teachers and see the other students if possible.... but I guess at this late date it would also depend on who has space.

Lime I needed that! I plan on living in Christiansted & I just wanted the best but I was told with traffic & Island driving it's going to be a pain if I decide to get a job. I will definitely compare the two!

Hello- This is Jill Wilson, Director of the new Star Apple Montessori Preschool in Christiansted.

With the opening of my school last fall, St. Croix now has three Montessori schools from which to choose.

As a new school, Star Apple opened with only 2-3 year olds last fall. This year we are again accepting new little 2 to 3 year olds, while continuing on with our students from last year. We will continue to do this each year until we have a full complement of 2- 6 year olds, giving each child a minimum of 3 years to learn in our enriched Montessori curriculum.

Our school is located on a beautiful half acre hilltop overlooking the harbor and the hills of Christiansted. We frequently walk into town to explore, go to the library and learn about the cultural riches of the island. The class is a very loving group of little children, and we have a blast every day, both inside the class, in our organic garden, and with the frequent visitors who come to make music, cook with them, read stories and perform for them.

Come check Star Apple out as you make your decision on where to place your young child. Our tuition is the most affordable of all the Montessori schools in the territory, and the quality, beauty and depth of what we offer is second to none.

Hope to meet you soon!

It would appear that each school is different in their health form policy. Country Day School, where my kids attend, has their own forms online and we had to have them in hand before the kids could even enter the school for their interviews and testing! (There was no stool sample required, either, but we did have to have blood work drawn.) Good luck in your decision!

Lisa

P.S. It's my understanding that the kids can only attend Rattan until first grade (or age 6). Can anyone with specific knowledge of that school confirm this for new2daboard?

pop, 6 is usually the cutoff age for Montessori scools in general. Occassionally, at Rattan they will allow the child to stay one more year if that is what the parents choose.

Does Star Apple any sort of after school program? I am a single mom and I get off work at 5, which is making my son's current school setting a bit of a hassle.

Rattan Montessori after care ends at 4. And the age cut of is children that have not turned 7 by September 1st of the upcoming fall school year.

Our child has been there three years now and we are happy with the program
