missing the mainland
I am going to be down in St John after the holidays with my girlfriend at her sisters house. Her sister loves to cook gourmet food and I know misses many cooking staples that were available to her on the mainland (in New Jersey). I would like to pick up some spices that are normal everyday food in the Northeast such as Seasame Seeds and bring them down for her as a gift. Any other suggestions? Or suggestions for other things that she may be "homesick" for?
When my relatives visit, I always have them bring me some Krispy Kremes! I know it sounds funny, but it is strange the things you miss living here. Like Arby's, Taco Bell and Burger King! But, I'm thinking she might be a little higher up the evolutionary scale for that! I love to cook, too, but I still want a Whopper! haha! As far as spices, go, ge, I dunno. I've always ben able to find everything I needed. Anyone else got any ideas?
You can find most everything you need down here, just not the brands or prices of Stateside. You might ask her what cooking utensils or cookware she needs. Those things have to be ordered and shipped if you are even a little bit picky. I personally just miss friends and family - so you are probably covered. 😉

Chris,
Before the last boat show one of the brokers attending called and asked what he could bring me .... wasn't everyone surprised when he showed up the night of the show with a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts and I DIDN'T SHARE!

I would think Maple syrup perhaps. I was wondering if fresh cranberries are difficult to get. Spices are easy to mailorder so I would bring stuff which is more parishable and difficult to ship. I like to cook myself but as I have not had to go out shopping on the island for a dish I would not know what I could not get easily at the local stores. I remember can goods and dry goods are no big deal. Fresh fruit and vegetables looked questionable.

Iris,
Fresh cranberries are plentiful right now. The fruit and veggies here on St. Thomas are old by the time we get them so they don't keep. It is not a good idea to shop for fresh stuff and expect it to last an entire week in your fridge. I seem to find everything I need for cooking although have gone to some labels I had never seen in the stateside markets and you do substitute a bit more - using arrowroot for corn starch, etc.
Spices are easily come by here as Grenada is Spice Island and people bring them up all the time. Hope Hurricane Ivan didn't stop that!
Pamela.
How about maple syrup is it insanely expensive on the islands? I am just curious what you really can't get or is very expensive.
Thanks
Iris
all i miss from back home (NJ also) is pork roll! apparently you can't freeze it though so its pretty tough to even have someone bring it.
Iris: After awhile you get used to buying things you want without worrying about the price- everything is expensive unless you are coming from NYC. Also the old term "making do" comes to mind. Although it has changed considerably over the past few years, you still have to be flexible when you shop- "no broccoli, okay, tonight we will have...frozen peas!"
I like to bake with maple syrup instead of corn syrup. It can get costly even around here. If it was expensive enough I would have people bring it to me in barrels lol. I am ok with being flexible in cooking. However it has to be euqally healthy and tasty.
