missing pregnant dog
Hubby was outside early this morning and saw a medium size white dog who had just given birth to 1 puppy on the side of the road. Yellow Cliff Trail in Cotton Valley. She ran off and left the puppy. Hubby took the puppy to Dr. Canton and they cleaned her up and gave us formula for her. We went searching for the mommy and found her deep into the bush. She has a collar on and had 3 more puppies. One was dead. We put the first puppy back with her and she accepted her. We are taking her back food and water and going to call Dr. Canton back for advice. Does anyone know this dog? She is still panting so probably still in Labor.
Hubby just went back into the bush to check on the dog and puppies. They are still in the same spot. Hubby gave the mom more food and water.
dougtamjj---That's great! Kuddos to you and hubby for your care of the momma dog and pups.
You guys are awesome Tam!
Thanks guys but I don't want to be a hero I just want to find the owner of the dog. We were thinking of trying to put a leash on her tomorrow and bring her to our house with the pups but she is a bit growly. Don't want to get bit but don't want the pups to die out in the bush. I know the mom will protect them as best she can. Anybody got any advice. I guess we can just keep feeding her and hope for the best. She has a collar on so she belongs to someone. Maybe hubby can get a bit closer to her tomorrow.
Update on the dog and puppies. We went to give her some canned food today as she looks a bit thin. She was very aggressive and would not let us get close. We stooped down and tried to show her submitting posture so she would come and get the food but she wanted us to leave. She followed us out of the bush to make sure we were gone barking the whole time. We could not see the puppies but we could hear them. We will try and get a picture of her to post around when we feed her this evening. Right now we will just keep giving her food and water and as the puppies get older maybe she will let us get closer. They are beautiful pups. Big and strong. Mom is all white and looks like some sort of Shepperd. The puppies look like Pitt bulls. Hubby says one is black. The one we found is a brindle.
Greetings Tam. I just sent ya a PM
Got it aussie. Thanks.
Great news. Humane society are coming to get mom and pups. I have dibs on the female brindle. We named her Miracle.
Wonderful news, Tam, Well done! Best wishes to you and Miracle!
Awwww....sounds like a happy ending. Good job!
We went to feed the mom and all but one of the puppies have died. We don't think the mom has any milk. We have the one black male. JJ is calling him Nick. He asked me for all of you who are so inclined to please pray with us that little Nick makes it. JJ said he will make sure that Nick has the best life ever. We are feeding him but he is very weak.
Thank you all
Tammy
I'm so sorry to hear that, Tammy.
Does anyone know of emergency veterinarian services that may be available to Tammy tonight? Dr Duke Deller takes calls after hours but he's on the west end.
I already called Kasey Canton. He says there isn't much we can do. We give a him a few drops of formula every 15 minutes. We have him on hot water bottles as his body temp drops quickly if we don't. We keep rubbing him to stimulate him. Hubby is awesome. He rigged an oxygen tent. We still had oxygen bottles here from when my mom lived with us. He took the mask from JJs nebulizer machine and we hung it at the top of the basket that we have little Nick in with a pillow case to form the tent. The poor mom is in the front yard pacing. We cannot get her to come in. She is so thin. I think she was probably abused. Please forgive me if an owner comes forward and I am wrong. I am going to put out more food and water for her. JJ is crying off and on but taking his turn is stimulating the puppy. It's my turn now so the guys can eat their dinner.
Thank you so much aussie. You have been a great help. Beachy you too as usual.
Love and hugs to the dogs and your family.
I hope he makes it through the night. Sounds like you are doing everything you can for that puppy. good luck.
Hi everyone. The puppy didn't make it. We will still try to find the mommy's owner and try to post some pictures today. We are putting food and water out for her. Hopefully she has a good owner and they are looking for her. If the humane society doesn't come out to day we will try and catch her and take her to the vet to make sure she is ok.
Thanks for all your support.
Tammy
Tammy... did you call the Humane Society or the Animal Shelter? Here on St. Croix, it is the Animal Shelter (AWC) you need to call. The number is 778-1650. The Humane Society is on St. Thomas.
Moises, the head warden at AWC for the last 12 years, is in the hospital in emergency care (please everyone send him well wishes... he is a critical team member at the shelter and well loved and respected in our community.). Moises' two assitant wardens, as well as volunteers and staff, have been responding to call-ins this week, but they are admittedly streched thin and are taking calls on a most-critical first basis. Is the dog still there? If you can approach the dog, as you mentioned above, and know where she is, they will have no problem capturing her.
Please call them at the number above and ask for Gretchen. She is the Shelter Coordinator. They will need very good directions on how to find you and her.
---- Who is the owner of this dog? Have you gotten a picture of the dog ? You say she is collared - any chance of a tag? It is so sad how irresponsible pet ownership on this island seems to be the norm. The fact she has a collar lets you know she once belonged to someone. I hope her owner is looking for her. Makes me so mad. -----------
Please... everyone - SPAY/Neuter your pet. Put a collar on your pet and buy a license - $5.00 at the shelter. Keep your pet on your property and do not let them wander the neighborhood. If you lose your pet, call the shelter and the vets and report it missing. If you want to add a pet as a new member to your family... ADOPT or rescue one. And PLEASE... go visit the shelter and give them your support. There are a hundred animals there right now WAITING for a forever home. Some have been there waiting for months. The shelter has found homes for 200+ animals so far this year and is helping hundreds more. Give them your support. They have a hard job in an uncaring community... remember, its about helping the animals... their hearts are in your hands.
Lifetime we called the animal shelter and other people have called as well. I have been told that they will come out today to look for the mommy dog. We have not seen her all day but we are still putting food out for her. Something ate the food between 12 and 1 today. We will take a picture if we can find her. There is a lady here in cotton valley who is looking as well.
🙁 Too bad about the puppy. It sounds like you did everything you could. Hopefully the mom is doing ok and they can pick her up and get her looked at. She must be distraught after loosing all of her puppies. Thanks for caring about them. It's good to know that there are people like you out there.
So sad about the puppies.
