Greetings-
Here are a few other things that we leared about shipping to STX yesterday.

- If the person whose name is on the title will not be there to ship it you must have a Export Power of Attorney. (had the woman at Tropical not overheard my fiancee and I speaking of me shipping his motorcycle after he left we'd have had big problems!!!)

- When shipping a motorcycle it must be in a crate. BUT, if it's in a fully enclosed wooden crate customs will open it (and according to the woman at Tropical they charge you to open in, and charge you again to close it). She suggested that we contact a moorcycle dealer and ask for the metal cage-style crate that they ship bikes in. (We had allready contacted one Harley dealer in our area and they said they didn't have any style of crate.) When we left Tropical we went to the Harley dealership in West Palm and they said they have the cage style, and it is only $100 plus labor.

- After shipping the Jeep we went to the consolidation company that Tropical uses (BI Consolidation) to get some info about shipping our household items and furniture. Very helpful! Looks like we should be able to ship everything for approximately $1,000 if we deliver it to them ready to ship (furniture wrapped).

-- Our biggest lesson was that you get MUCH more accomplished in person then over the phone or via email.

If anyone is planning on using Tropical I'll give you the names of who we dealt with.

The "in person" lesson is important and hard to learn. I've lived on STX for almost 2 years and it it ALWAYS faster to go the the store/office/shop than to try and call. People who are wonderful and helpful in person are worthless over the phone.

Don't know why, but that's the way it is.

Thanks for the info Hydrophile,
PLease give me the names and numbers of the contacts at Tropical. I've called on the phone, and was treated real well, but always having another contact could prove useful.

I am shipping a car and some personal effects in boxes. How far away is the consolidation company they use? I ask because I'll drop off the boxes to ship, then drop the car and pick a rental to get to MIA and catch a flight over to STT.
Thanks,
Edgar

I would be MOST grateful if you would please share the names of the people whom you dealt with. We are also planning on using Tropical to ship our JEEP and a small trailer of personal belongings. BTW, have you ever dealt with Lee of Managed Freight? We've heard alot of good things about him and his company and are also considering obtaining his servcices. I understand he works closely with Tropical shipping and can also take care of registering your car on the island upon its arrival.

Hi All-
Alicia at Tropical (561-881-3900 ext.2987) was a wonderful help. And Mark Taggart at BI Consolidation (Sorry, I don't have a number). Mark was an amazing resource and said that we should ask specifically for him when we get there. He said that he and Carl are the best at consolidating the shipment to reduce the cost to the customer. Said that other employees were less likely to go out of their way to keep costs down. Also suggested that we use boxes of the same size as they are easier to fit on a pallet. He told me he would be on vacation fron June 11 to 22.

Hope this helps!
Nicole
