Misc. Jobs in STX

Hello,
I am a graphic designer in Ohio. So far, in my research, I have found little to no info about any kind of jobs in my field down there. I'd like to give it a try in STX, with my girlfriend. Maybe a year or so. We have a couple we know there. My gf's family friends. They have a nice house overlooking the casino area.

We went to visit them last month and stayed in their guest house. It was really paradise. I know they are well off and all, and have no delusions of living like that if I were to try. However, they do have 2 apts on their property... one underneath the guest house and one underneath theirs. I'm sure it would be expensive. Too much for what I would think I might make. I mean, it MUST be at least $1000/month.

Which brings me back to the point... I am a graphic artist. I actually met one there that our friends are friends with. He's older though and I'm not sure if I could land a job doing that or not. If NOT, I am wondering how many miscellaneous jobs might be available. Graphic design and Pizza is all I've really done. I should easily be able to get a job if there's a need for those. But I understand that might be hard to come by. I'm wondering about warehouse/shipping/grunt work. Anything anyone that can breathe/think/walk/carry can do... that might be able to provide a living somewhere there if I had a job like that and my gf landed a similar paying job.

Basically, in a nut shell; it is my goal to end up there at some point. I realize my profession isn't the most money oriented, even at it's most aspiring levels... and probably not down there even more so.
And I'm not hell-bent on going. I just really, really, really want to. I can't stop thinking about it.

Anyone have any overall consensus on the misc. job pool down there?

Thanks,
Phil

p.s. While we were there, the man of the couple brought up to my gf, while i was smoking elsewhere, that he could see us living down there (apparently island life isn't for some--i can understand, not sure if its for me but still wanna try) and he said that between him and her, they know a lot of people and could find us jobs. But he just said it to her and it was just once, and I haven't talked to them yet since we left. And I'm wondering if he might just be kind of bringing up conversation. Never the less, the idea was planted and neither of us can shake it.

Phil, the first thing you seriously need to do is research this forum. If you go to the first post on this page it will direct you to all the basics about living here. Then go to the moving stories, then research every thread you can think of via the search engine.

Once you've throughly researched everything (and this is going to take some time) think about doing a serious PMV. NOT another vacation but a serious PMV to look at job options. You will have very little luck looking for job opportunities from off-island.

Get those fingers working on this forum bigtime and seriously try to absorb everything which is at your fingertips. Keep a grasp on reality and try to distance yourself from the vacation ideal of blue skies and warm beaches. Good luck!

Yeah Connie,

I've been doing that for the most part. I know what your saying too. I've read enough to see people get told that left and right. I'm not saying I've exactly put myself in that mentality though 😉

From what I have gathered, I already know I'm not being too realistic about it. Like I said, Im not hell-bent, just really want to do it. Once I'm hell-bent, I'll get to more and more specifics. But I also think it might be a bit different for me because I have a contact down there that would help us. Not that I want to rely on that though.

I know I'll have to take the pmv once I get serious, but for now, just seeing if anyone can give me any more info than what I'm seeing, about misc jobs there.

Thanks

First thing you need to know that $1,000 is NOT a lot for a nice apartment in a nice area.

ok... Well, I really don't know how much it is. 1,000 was just a guesstimate by what I've read. I said expensive, because for me, $1,000/month is. I'd think it might be relative though, once I got down there, depending on the job I'd have. Not that I know what that would be or what it would pay... Which is why I'm posting on here.
Again, thanks for the help people
