Middle aged employment opportunities in St Croix
My husband and I are interested in relocating to St. Croix. My question is, What are the employment opportunities for mid-40's couples in St. Croix like. I have worked as Hotel housekeeping supervisor and in clerical jobs; and my husband is a certified forklift operate. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
We have found good opportunities for middle aged folks on STX. Work experience and a work ethic go a long way. Salaries are low, however, especially entry level. But I've seen lots of folks start out in a entry level position and move up rather quickly.
JOy,
Since when did you consider yourself middle aged and only in your mid-forties? WE are also in the same age group and do not consider ourselves middle aged. We are moving also, the sooner the better, and will be looking for employment. Remember....YOU ARE ONLY AS YOUNG AS YOU FEEL. Good luck on your job search. Maybe when we get there we could work for you... LOL
A few places where forklift operators would be able to look for work would be at the Airport, at the Container Port on the south shore by Hovensa, or at the Cargo Port in Christiansted by Gallows Bay. A few stores, such as Cost-u-Less, use fork lifts, but generally train someone for the limited amount of this that they need. Some of the delivery companies have forklift drivers for unloading containers of things like groceries, building supplies, furnishings, appliances, etc.
We have a number of hotels and probably more that will begin construction within the next couple of years, so you could approach them about their housekeeping management positions. Only a few of the current hotels are very large, so most probably don't have much of a management staff for housekeeping. There are always clerical positions available and if you are good at what you do and have a good work ethic, you would likely find that type of position through word of mouth fairly quickly.
Even though salaries can be low, if there are just the two of you and no children needing expensive private school tuition paid for, you can likely make ends meet on the jobs you could find. Most people find that the way of life here is different and their standard of living also goes under some revision. For example, you don't need a 3 bedroom home for just one or two people and you don't need fancy cars or a designer wardrobe. A lot of the island's entertainment is free. Those changes help with the budget.
