Pirates Tavern in Salt River
Salud has great enchiladas, right by the fort in Csted.
i did not like pirates but have heard great things of marias
Maria's is the best Mex on STX!
And in STT???? ;D Thanks!
Greengo's in town authentic but not open at night.
Is that in STT?
Sorry, Greengo's in STT, across from Belgian Chocolate Factory
whoa whoa whoa... Now were talking.. chocolate factory? Seriously, how is this island only 28sq miles and Ive only seen such a small part. Seems like ive been buzzing all around lately and still feel like ive only seen a sliver of it. Gonna have to do some more exploring.
Went to Pirates Tavern cause it is closer. It was pretty good. Nice spot on marina. Cool breeze last night. Good service and food good too.
Pirates Tavern is at best Tex-Mex. Good quantity of mediocre food. Maria's on the other hand is Mexican, she is from Veracruz. Try her carnitas. Anything smothered in her Verde sauce is great. Try the carnitas street tacos with a little Verde sauce, you'll love it.
When I went over Ag Fair weekend to visit friends we ate at Maria's and had a less than stellar experience there. Service wasn't that great ( over an hour to get our first drink order ) and it was disorganized. Food wasn't bad but it didn't blow me away. I hope it was just that they were having a off-night as the menu selection was great for any of the VI mexican places that I have been to...
I like Pirates Tavern but it is pretty pricey for what should be relatively inexpensive food. They have the margaritas priced right at $5 but $15 for an enchilada or burrito platter seems kinda high. And charging for the chips and salsa seems kind of petty when they used to be free with an entree. I have been to Miriams a couple of times and I fail to see why some people rave about it. I also like Luncheria on Company Street even though I don't go there often. The owner is a friendly guy and something about chickens jumping on the table while you are eating makes it feel kind of authentic. Their sangarita is one of my favorite anytime beverages too. I have not been to Marias Cantina yet but have heard plenty of complaints about the slow service. The Golden Rail also has a cheap taco night - I have been once and the food was okay but the place was packed on taco night and service was way too slow.
Agree burrito platter is pricey at $15. Took home half though. Did think charging for chips n salsa was cheesy. Leftovers tonight were good too. But I am from Massachusetts and I can tell good clam chowder from not so good, but not as good with Mexican food. I will go back to Pirates Tavern as 2 meals for $20 (chips n burrito platter) wasn't too bad. And medium spice level still had a kick. Not boring and tasteless like most.
In November, Pirate's Tavern had $6 burritos on Wednesdays (eat-in only). I don't know if they still have that.
Maria's is the best Mex on STX!
really?
I tried it and wasn't overly impressed, but perhaps I'm just comparing it to stateside places in my mind as I'm new to the island.
I thought the menu was lacking in a few "standard" mexican resturant dishes, what I did have was not bad, but not amazing, & the service seemed fine to me, this was last friday night with a group of about 12 people.
I worked in a Mexican kitchen for fifteen years before my full time Guard gig. Maybe I should look into opening one up when I get down there. All I need is willing investors. and the economy to turn around. *snickers* I do miss a good huevos rancheros, or enchiladas with a good mole` suace.
Maria's Cantina in Gallows Bay is really good. She has the best Nachos, for an additional cost you can add peppers, onions and mushrooms, delicious.
Is Maria's in the old Case Place location?
Maria's is in the old Anything Goes Deli / Basic Butcher location. Just up the "mall" from The Bistro and Under the Palms.
I finally went to Maria's Cantina last night. They had a pretty good crowd but the service was excellent as well as the food. The margaritas could be a little bigger and the sangria less sweet but overall I would rate it as the best mexican restaurant I have been to on St. Croix.
Luncheria, really am I the only one who goes there?
(personally I hate eating with a dozen TV's on but if you like sports bars then Maria's is good)
luncheria is good but not spicy enough
