Whats the Mexican food like in the VI? Do you think an authentic, homemade everything real breakfast tacos, bistek, trompo, homemade Matamoros style tortilla, secret recipe salsa, small restaurant would go over well?

Since Polly's moved to St John, there has only been one Mexican restaurant on St Thomas. If you have a good margarita and don't try to gouge people like Margarita's on St John, you might do fine! I will be happy to test the margarita!! ROFL!

I actually do have a great Margarita recipe.

I am sorry to see that I have already recieved an anti-Mexican email from someone. Though I am not of hispanic origin, I do hope I am not moving to an island full of racism (I am used to being the white minority as it is where I live on the border). I welcome all people to Texas, bring your Carribean food, I would love to try it!

I am still gonna move there, and if you dont like Mexican Food, dont eat at my restaurant as it is all I will be serving!!!! And my prices will be reasonable, and everything will be homemade! If the building I found is still available for the same price when I am ready to move.

Hey Bpadivers:

I have family in Mexico and grew up eating homemade tamales. If you think you can even come close to my tia's cooking, you can count me in as a regular customer! But I must echo East Ender, don't price yourself out of business. There are many restaurants on St Thomas that I will never eat at again b/c the food didn;t make a dent in my appetite, but made a huge dent in our wallet.

I am also sorry that you have received some negative email in response to your query. I am a relatively new internet forum participant and am still learning how to remain unphased by people who opt to be offensive or obnoxious. Posting on a public, anonymous forum does leave you open to hearing from those who perhaps you would never ordinarily socialize with. By the same token, you can have positive communications with people who you might have otherwise overlooked.

Good for you on keeping up with your plans and good luck on the restaurant.

Well I shall welcome you as a customer!

Polly's had some of the greatest chicken fahita quesadillas, and the guac :-).... so yes bring it on.

East Ender isnt there a mexican restaurant down in Frenchtown, around where the boat ramp is, next to where the big Crowley trailors and stuff unload - I cant remember the name. Right where Kon Tiki ties up in the evening. Ill think about the name and see if I remember. If its still there, then its the only one.

There used to be the fast food stuff, Taco Bell - the location did not do well. And the second one also was a bit far out. But are gone now.

Yes, there is the place at Gregerie Channel, next to Radio One, but I have never been there... In case someone else wants to start a restaurant, we could use a good Vietnamese and Thai place!!!!

TACO BELL IS NOT MEXICAN FOOD. It doesnt even qualify as Mexican fast food. There are much better fast food resaurants such as Taco Palenque.

How about a good Dim Sum restaurant. I cant cook Dim Sum other than a few simple dishes, but how about you?

What types of dishes are considered local dishes there? What type of fruits or veggies are used?

Are there any good Carribean food resaurants in St. Croix? I love food, and eat out often at the holes in the wall mostly, not the fancy places. I would rather have authenticity than fancy, or sometimes even minus the cleanliness.

I lived on St. Croix for a year and a half and I remember there being a great mexican restaurant called Luncheria, I can't be certain of that name, but none the less, St Croix has a great mexican restaurant.! It is in Christiansted.

Ok - Taco bell the fast food taco makers popular in the US mainland used to be on island. 🙂 My point was that they did not make it.... my opinion was that they were in poor locations, however there might be other factors as well (perhaps in terms of locals liking that type of food - again not sure the specifics on why they did not do well)... just thought I would mention it.

East Ender yes thats the place. I have eaten there, it was pretty good... I just cant think of the name.

As for the varieties of Asian food (Dim Sum, Thai, Indian....) the ones that exist are Chinese Food. Quite a few actually. Most are walk up windows, take out type thing... big plate, lots of rice not a high price... they do well. there is a Japanese restaurant in town... it has switched ownership several times or so the signs outside say... not sure how well they do but have been there for a couple years.

Local dishes.... Fish - boiled, fried, stewed.... local fish. Goat dishes. Lots of chicken dishes. Jonny Cakes, DumBread, Fungi and fish, Blood Pudding... Fruits mango, kenip, tamarind, papaya, guava, pomergranate, figs, sugarapple, soursop.... drinks - maubi, hibicus tea.... there is a fruits, fauna... section on this site.. with pictures of some local fruits.

Yes, Luncheria is still inthe Apothecary Courtyard on St. Croix, still great and still inexpensive. Also in Christiansted are Thai Garden (mostly Thai, some Chinese) and Savant, which offers Thai-Mexican-Caribbean fusion cuisine.

Hey, I used to live in McAllen, Tx and spent lots of time in Mexico eating at the great restaurants. I'll be moving to the USVI this year and will be happy to try your restaurant! Homemade Mexican food is great!

There is a spot in East End that sells 'mexican/spanish' type foods - burritos and tacos, more of a deli... it was OK.
