Metro motors ripoff
My neighbors exhaust pipe on her 2012 Ford rusted into at the head pipe. She went there for an estimate and they wanted over $3,000 to fix everything that was wrong.
Would not give her an itemized list. I told her to go back and tell them she only wanted the pipe replaced and to get the list.
They only have her a list of the head pipe repair.
The main pipe looked high but island acceptable. However the other parts were out of line.
For two " spring nuts" they wanted $28.60 each. I told her to check the part numbers onlin. She could have bought the for $3.25 each.
Gaskets were the same way.
When she went back they knocked off a whole. $25 off the bill.
They listed shipping twice, once in the formal quote at $125 and then handwritten below another $100.
I would take my car or truck to Francis Muffler. I've used them before and was very happy. The car dealerships here are a complete rip off when it comes to repairs and I would never use them. I buy my parts from dealers in Miami or RockAuto.com and have them shipped here.
Reminds me of a story about Caribbean auto mart.
Years ago a friends vehicle was over heating. After they had it 2 weeks they told her $3000 to fix the intake manifold. We had her take it to MPH and it was a loose wire to the cooling fan. Fixed in 2 minutes.
MPH is the only mechanic I would ever use on STX.
thats nothing new. buy your parts online and find someone to do the work other than a dealership. even in the states dealerships charge outlandish amounts
If the head pipe you are speaking of is the pipe from the manifold there may be a lot involved in the repair. If the manifold is rotted and or cracked that may make up a large part of the estimate. The entire exhaust system may need replacement due to rot from the salt. Flanges connecting pipes together rot out before the actual components and they are not repairable which will warrant replacing the cat, muffler etc. The manifold will make up a huge part of that estimate because of labor and the part itself.
You didn't say what kind of car either. Front drive or rear? Four wheel drive or rear? Four cylinder or six? It may not be a ripoff.
A 2012 exhaust rusted? I call BS right there.
I have. 2012 ford. Perfect exhaust. The exhaust did start to rust on my Honda though - after 18 years.
I wonder if they're related to the Metro Motors on St Thomas, also a Ford dealership. I bought parts for my Explorer stateside a couple of years back and got an estimate from them to install them. The mechanic I was using at the time didn't have a lift which was necessary. Got an itemized estimate and have to say that they really did a good job on the vehicle and kept to their (very reasonable) quoted price.
Sorry your neighbor had bad luck but even if you're not savvy about all those parts and fixes, it's not hard to go online and research a problem so at least you have an inkling of what might be amiss. Better to be forearmed - and I'm really surprised she would walk out without an itemized estimate.

We don't know the history of the vehicle. Maybe it was driven in the surf. It does sound strange for it to have that much rust being only 3 years old. The OP didn't give enough info.
If you lived where we do you would have this problem. STC condos. She was parking it in the worst spot in the complex
They were somewhat reasonable on labor, $170.
cruzan, i know my exhaust used to rust more frequently in the states-they said it was because i did not drive it far enough to dry out the moisture? of course there was lots of morning dew there and dont know if this was just something someone said without it being true?

They are referring to the water build up inside the pipes. Modern exhaust systems are stainless steel and have weep holes throughout allowing water to escape until exhaust temperatures cause the excess to steam off. Older cars had steel pipes and no weep holes so if you took short trips the water would collect and rust out the system from the inside sooner.
thank you. this was an older car for sure.

Thank you! Can u put their contact here?
My fiancé has taken his car to H&H three times. Each time they forget to do something he asked to be done. He recently took it in for oil change and fluids and I'm not really sure if they even did the work - the PS fluid was still at same level - was supposed to be included. So now I'm worried they didn't do anything at all.
Even worse last week his check engine light came on. He took it in again and they said it was something exaust related cleaned and fixed it. Well it came back on same day. They didn't charge him but I feel like they're not really doing the work. If rather pay and know it was done and correctly.
Where is MPH - his light is still on and knowing how much he procrastinates I'll need to take it in ASAP. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Heading east past Foodtown.
Hard left
Some are Stainless but most are aluminumized steel. And at the weld joints such as where they weld on a flange if needed it will rust faster there. But even the aluminumized will eventually rust.
Really nasty stuff to weld:-(
Yes, my bad, going east past Foodtown, hard left at 5 corners light.
MPH, former Ford mechanic and very reliable!
