At the end of the month, VIBES (VI BBQ Education Society) is holding a BBQ cooking competition at the Ag Fairgrounds. It's open to the public and all levels of cooks and chefs are welcomed! It's not for profit and all proceeds will go to Skills USA and their class project to rebuild the destroyed family home of Mrs.B Andrews. She's a single mother of 2 and lost everything in the fire. Proceeds will go to purchase much needed supplies and the students will use the project as a vocational learning experience.

Cooking set up can begin as early as noon Saturday the 28th (for slow cookers) and security will be on hand for those who want to camp out overnight. The cooking competition starts early Sunday the 29th. It's open to the public with an entry fee of $10. The $10 is good for tickets that will be redeemed for BBQ meats prepared by competitors, beer, or sides.

If you wish to compete, it's a $40 registration fee. Bring your own meats, grills, and decorations but forget cooking with propane. Propane and electric starters are fine to get the blaze going, but once the fire is lit, all propane tanks must be removed from the area. BBQ is best done slow and low with wood chips or charcoal. Categories include: BBQ sauce, Anything Goes free-for-all, beef smoked/grilled, pork smoked/grilled, and grilled dessert. Visit the VIBES website for complete rules and signup information.

Contact BBQVIBES@gmail.com if you're interested. Please check out the website www.vibesinfo.com and if you don't want to compete, at least come visit us on Sunday May 30th to support a good cause!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Wish I were there. It sounds like fun and great food. The smoker I am bringing in is almost cheating,Electric and it uses very little wood. I did a small Prime rib in it the other day, talk about good if you like smoked meats. Just finished left overs, scrambled cheese eggs, potatoes and a nice piece of Prime rib. Sounds like a morning special to me. I don't think I will enter my food in competitions, just not that competitive. It is always great to see how someone else does it though, and there is a lot of technique out there to learn.

Any local BBQ specialist reading this thread. I sure wood like to know what kind of local hardwoods you are using ? I know I can get Hickory and Mesquite at Kmart. Just wondering what kind of local fruit woods may be readily available. Enjoy the competition this weekend it sounds like a lot of fun. I plan on hitting the Island June 9Th,let the fun Begin.

I knew my post would get a response from you, Chris!

The competition is mostly a fun way to raise funds and have a get together. I always thought prime rib was better the 2nd or 3rd day reincarnated into sandwiches, breakfast, soups, casseroles etc.

It doe's seem to get better with age. So much out there to learn about cooking, etc. So many flavors and styles. Which way doe's a body go ? I really like old school, you could say. I tend to cook steaks on the grill with Charcoal at home. I think it will be to much work dealing with the clean up and disposal issues to try this commercially,so we end up with grill your own on the big flat top gas grills.

This Smoker I have is the Bomb. I will shut up now, giving all my tricks away. Lets just say the Rib eye steaks turn out really good and the Platters I serve them on will hold plenty of food. I got very lucky in the dish department. That is kind of how this whole venture has worked out. I run into a rough spot that is going to cost a lot of money, and a week or so later, things just fall into my lap somehow. I guess if anyone believes in Fate and all that good stuff,I feel like I am supposed to do this, somewhere it is written. I look forward to meeting all of you, working with some of you and Serving all. See you all soon.

Chris

The fairground is on Centerline (Route 70) about half-way between Sunny Isle and Frederiksted.

Marty, throw your grill on the ferry and come on over!

If you're heading west, the fairground will be on the right side of the road, lots of small yellow booths on a big chunk of land.

Spread the word and get your team of 5 or less together. Show up with your grill and a cooler with whatever you want. Cook it up for a chance to win a free pass to compete in Puerto Rico over the 4th of July weekend.

What's better on Memorial Day weekend than beer and BBQ?

Noah. Can you talk them into waiting until I arrive ? Ha,ha. It does sound like fun. Having a little party here this weekend. The menu consist of a 14 pound smoked brisket,14 pound Pork butt,3 Large racks of pork spare ribs and a couple pounds of smoked salmon. Throw in a few sides, a couple of bands and a lot of beer. Looks like we have a party on the Continent.

Enjoy the competition on island. My plane ticket says I return on June 12Th,see you sometime the following week.

Thanks speee1dy! To my chagrin, we decided to postpone the BBQ competition until the following Sunday, June 6th.

We had the flash flood warning in affect until Saturday night, so that led us to believe that the Ag Fairgrounds would be one big mud bowl the following day.

$10 at the door gets all sorts of BBQ food, drinks, and samples of competitors entries.

www.vibesinfo.com for complete info!

Well, the weatherman was right. My cistern runneth over right now.

So, we have an extra week who wants to drag their grill down, pay $40 and compete in one of several categories?

PM me or visit the website

Chris, just move your ticket up a week!

Just an update, we had an absolute blast pulling off the 1st annual BBQ competition!
Dave from Good Spirits was crowned "King of the Grill" and will move on to Puerto Rico for the 4th of July Cattleman's BBQ competition.

Lisa, thanks for showing your support, hope you had a great time!

If you didn't come this year, we'll see you next year. That means you Chockman!

The Virgin Island BBQ Education Society plans to grow and include monthly meetings, BBQ classes, and how to become a BBQ judge training courses.

The Governor stopped by for a plate, and we're pushing to have the first Sunday of every June dubbed "BBQ day"

Thanks again 🙂
