hi! i am trying to make a decision and need a little feedback...i am stuck at a career to finish school in! i'm planning on moving to the USVI (haven't decided between STX or STT yet but have been to both) after i graduate but which career is there more of a need for in the islands? i'm going between a degree in radiology/medical assisting or one in communications. any thoughts on which may help secure a better job? anyone currently doing either of these down there?

thank you in advance!

To be honest curious,

i have no experience with either one and don't know anyone on the island who does, but I can tell you that most people in the medical field can find jobs where ever they want to live. As long as there are people there will be medical physicians needed. I wold also say that a degree or certification in communications is good but most people like experience especially if its gonna be a smaller company. But I wold suggest going to the employment page on this website and going to the bottom of the page where they list hospitals and giving them a call and askign them if that type of assistance is needed.

I know its not much, but its a start.

Go with what you "want" to do & what appeals more to you. Which would you be more skilled at? It makes no difference which would be more desirable here since you might move here & not stay more than 6 months (or you might be here for life.)

That's such a different set of options.

Trade good advice, no point of planing your whole life around a location when you might not even enjoy living there once you get there

IMHO employment in the medical field has been very secure over the past 20 years. Although the cost of health care keeps skyrocketing, it doesn't seem that anyone has the will to do anything about it. If you are providing service, you are in a better position than someone who is administering (can always get down-sized.) There are a wide variety of occupations from certified nursing assistant, various technologists (laboratory, radiology, pharmacy), allied health fields (like respiratory therapist, physical therapist, medical social worker), nursing (and all the specialties within), up to physician/god. (;))The list goes on and on. In general, you should find something you like and worry about the money later. When you have to get up every morning and go somewhere day after day, year after year, it ought to be something that gives you satisfaction, if not joy.

thanks so much! that's the problem i have...i know i'd love to either one and if anything, i could always go back and do the other later in life or take classes while working. i know my trip will be long term as this has been in the works for years, multiple pmv's, just the college there (usvi) doesn't offer my school concentrations so I have to finish that here on the mainland before the move. i agree with EE in terms that healthcare is secure field to get into but with everything i had seen/heard about the hospitals there, wasn't sure what the jobs were like. on one trip to stx, we stayed near a lady that was a travelling nurse on contract there and she seemed to like it but at the same time, i'm not getting into nursing.

again, thanks so much for all your opinions! 🙂

curious: One thing about health care is that it is more than just hospitals. Granted hospitals are the main arena of the health care dollar, but remember stand alone practices, home care, long-term facilities, preventative care...

One area of health care on STX that I can speak to with authority are the rehab services.

I had a total knee replacement in the states and, after 6 weeks there returned home. I have been going to Beeston Hill 3 time a week for a month. They are knowledgeable, pleasant and totally professional. I am making good progress and am very well satisifed with the program. A friend of mine used Schusters and was also pleased with them.

Just my humble two cents but your further scholastical endeavours are solely up to you in life's scenario. With which do you feel more comfortable - ABSOLUTELY setting aside any USVI connections, thoughts, hopes and dreams?

The bottom line is that it's very hard for anyone to give you real advice because you seem to be basing your choice on what's marketable in the USVI with the secondary scenario dependent upon your primary druthers. Not a very good tactic!

Trade was quite correct in saying, " Go with what you "want" to do & what appeals more to you. Which would you be more skilled at? It makes no difference which would be more desirable here since you might move here & not stay more than 6 months (or you might be here for life.) "

We (as in sometimes testy forum contributors and I'm definitely one) can tell you, as we tell many prospective relocators to not only research this forum but also to research the online St Thomas Source and the online local daily newspaper, "The Virgin Islands Daily News." Both have substantial archives of not only up to date news but also editorial comments (more so on STT Source in both their Open Forum and Guest Editorial sections) than in the Daily News but at least via the internet the information is right there to hand if you only seriously tweak those fingers.

Instant answers just aren't there and both honestly and realistically can't be.. My advice would be to follow your heart where your future education is concerned but don't for a heartbeat even think about it in terms of your desire to live in the US Virgin Islands. Visiting is one thing, living and doing business here is a whole 'nother ballgame!

Cheers dear!

When I was in college communications was replacing the liberal arts major for people who couldnt decide what they wanted to do. I would choose something specific with a job market out there after you graduate. Why the heck else would you spend all that money on college for? If you're parents are paying for it I'm sure they know the answer. 🙂
