Medicare
We will be relocating to the VI next year. My question regards Medicare. Can I use this health plan in the USVI? Currently I am not old enough to qualify but will in three years. I already have a quote from Lifeboat for US citizens who reside outside the US that will cover me until I reach age 65. Any comments would be appreciated.
John: The USVI falls under Medicare and Social Security laws. BTW, you won't be living outside of the US, although sometimes you might think you are! 😉 For regular insurance, you will probably need a company that is licensed to sell in the USVI.
Hi:
Thanks for the info. I sort of figured that would be the case. If you check with the Social Security Admin. online they tell you that Medicare is available in Puerto Rico, some places in Canada and Mexico, Guam, and American Samoa. No mention of the USVI, and who in his right mind would attempt to call them on the phone for an answer.
I didn't mention, but, we are sailors and will be living aboard our boat so we will be traveling around the Caribbean. For that reason, I will probably need to consider the Lifeboat option in addition to Medicare. My significant other is a few years younger than me and I need to consider her insurance needs as well. Thanks again for the information.
John,
Many doctors accept Medicare. The hospital on ST. Thomas accepts it and various pharmacies. Lifeboat is an excellent provider in the area.

Hi Pamela:
Thanks for the info. I'm in really great shape for 62 and hope I don't have to use any of the medical facilities for quite awhile. Better to be prepared now than later though. Insurance premiums have been a concern to us and our cruising budget. If you lived in Minnesota and sailed on Lake Superior, you would know how much we are looking forward to becoming Islanders.
