medical/drug insurance in usvi
hi
we are considering a move to stt/stj via early retirement.
i'm seeking unbiased info., experience and recommendations about medical/drug insurance plans that are accepted in usvi hospitals/ pharmacies/ drs. and also provides quality coverage in u.s. mainland based ( nyc and miami) doctors/hospitals should that be needed.
do any provide mail order drug capabilities for chronic conditions e.g. asthma meds.
we are also seeking estimates of cost for h/w with no dependents.
do organizations such as e.g. the chamber of commerce or other membership org., have medical/drug plans that are accessable to independent businessman/professionals/cpa w/o employees.
thanks in advance for any info. provided
Mark,
I currently reside in Pennsylvania and have Blue Cross / Blue Shield through my employer.
I am supposed to carry this same coverage into my retirement, so I contacted the hospital on STT and inquired as to whether they were a particpating provider. Someone from the hospital (I can dig up the name if you'd like) contacted me and told me that they are part of Blue Cross/Shield and that many other practitioners there are also.

The first time I went to St. Thomas I noticed a sign on a building (near K-Mart - Lockwood Mall) that listed Blue Cross. I am in the same boat with regards to insurance once I retire so I was relieved.
I would do more research on the Blue Cross deal. As I understand it, the Blue cross name is licensed or something to different groups. I don't think that the local Blue Cross, which has the VI government insurance, is the same as a PA group. There are very few companies licensed to do business in the VI and medical insurance is very expensive. Definitely call TOPA as Islander recommended and see what they say. Good luck!
