Medical Services & Facilities
Considering a move and employment in the Medical Field as income (if that could be a consideration there) What is the take on the hospital, medical facilities, & private doctors on these islands as both providing care for the residents and as potential employers? I'm currently a registered nurse with licensure in 2 states in the US, 8 + yrs experience, and with specialty primarily in Emergency Medicine with some background in Home Infusions, & Med/Surg.....
which island would you be considering?
a lot of gripes about the hospital on stx these days.
Both the STT and STX hospitals have a good amount of traveling nurses on short term contracts - you might want to investigate that as an avenue to come down for 6 mo. or so to check it out on a temperary basis and decide if staying is a workable plan.
For St Thomas: Check out the SRMC website: http://www.rlshospital.org/Home.aspx. There is supposed to be a new CEO coming on board soon, so things may be in flux a bit at the moment. The territorial government is the employer. Maybe the pay isn't the highest, but the perks are unbelievable.
There are also opportunities in home health, home hospice (esp. with home infusion experience), doctor's offices, etc.
A couple of the public schools were looking for nurses. Pay is not great but benefits are good, and lots of days off including summers.

Was actually considering stx over stt to live and work on, although not clear into which islands have which facilities. Have not even heard of any facilities on stj as of yet (still pretty early on with my research). My interest right now is mostly on employment, since like I said that would be my source of income. Hope to stay healthy (knock on wood) and not have to need much as far as health services for myself, but it's smart to be well informed just in case...

You read my mind!! Traveling nursing has always been a consideration & was not aware that they had them there, so this is very good news. Thanks so much. Will dig deeper into this!

On the SRMC website, look at the tab for Myra Keating Community Health Clinic. It is the St John arm of the SRMC family.
