Anyone know of a capable and reliable marine mechanic on STX?

Can't get my transmission into reverse. Faulty control lever.

Also still looking for help in draining and cleaning the fuel tank.

What trans do you have?Borg Warner, ZF, etc.
My understanding is you are taking a repair course, maybe you can tackle it on your own with my help.

The transmission seems to be working well. We can shift manually into forward, neutral, and reverse. But that's really inconvenient, as we have to go below to do it.

The problem is the Morse MV-2 Control.

It was a problem when I bought the boat some months ago and has gotten worse. It appears I may have to replace the unit, but I would need help doing that.

Questions,
Does the transmissions lever move?
The push/pull aluminum knob next to the shifter needs to be pushed in ALL the way to engage the gearbox in the shifter, otherwise only the throttle would operate.
If it's all the way in & engaged, & the shift arm(on the control) just starts to move, then stops(common problem), this can be fixed...
If not,is the the shifter pushing/pulling the cable(at the top or bottom)?
You may have a broken cable(very cheap & easy).
I'm in STT, or I'd have a look at it for you, but happy to walk you through it.

I would like to take a look at it to see if I could help.
Is it inboard (engine inside) out outboard (engine hung on back)?

We can move the control lever forward and back, but wherever it is, the transmission is in forward. That just happened recently. Until last week, even though it was difficult to move, we could get into forward, neutral, and reverse; now just forward. We can put the transmission in neutral and reverse by going below and moving it manually.

Terry, It's inboard. I have the MV-2 Control manual.

If the transmission is in forward no mater what direction you select, I ask, does the cable push/pull at the shifter?
If so, you may have just a broken cable, if not the gearbox in the control needs repair/replace.
What is it?

Thanks, Terry! Terry took the entire control system apart, made the fixes, and put it all back together again. It works! 🙂
