*My wife and I are planing to sail our 50ft Ketch to one of the American Virgins, in November, and to live there for an indefinite period of time, on our boat. Unfortunately, I will need to continue to work. Fortunately, my work is of a consulting nature and all I need for it is a small air-conditioned office where I can keep some files and set up a computer and a fax machine. We are planing to fly down in the next month or so and try to find a liveaboard-friendly marina near a place where I could rent a small office. If anyone could suggest which marinas on which islands we should check out, we would very much appreciate the help.

Thank you,

Tom and Red Berger

Tom: There are no marinas on St John. On St Thomas you might look at Compass Point, American Yacht Harbor, and La Vida Marina. I believe they all have office space near by. Many live aboarders don't live in a marina, but on a mooring. If you look into that you might come up with a few more places. Check with DPNR about rules for moorings. Fair winds!

EastEnder,

Many thanks for your thoughtfull response. I will check out the marinas you mentioned and also look into the mooring situation. What is the DPNR?

Tom,

Department of Natural Resources:

See if they can mail you the Rules and Regulations Navigation Mooring and Anchoring of Vessels: Title 25 Chapter 16 VIRR Rules and Regulations Morring and Anchoring on Vessels and Houseboats Act of 1990 Subchapters 401 to 410.

The number I have is (340)774-3320 (operator for DPNR)

Which island do you prefer. We lived at Jones Maritime in our 51 footer for many years ere in St. Croix. We have friends that live aboard their catamaran at Green Cay. She works out of the boat using her computer. He manages an EDC company. There are lots of small office space here as well.
We prefer this island because we have no cruise ships to speak of and very little tourism. Buck island is just a short sail away. The harbor is so clean that people swim in it.
The board walk along the water front is adjacent to the marina. A slip, water, electricity will cost around $700/month. Email me and let me know how I can help if you want peace and tranquility. The rest of the islands are north of here and only 5-7 hours away. Usually a reach in both directions.

My 37' Hunter will be at Green Cay Marina. I prefer the quiet. Nice amenities, too. Pool, beach, showers, etc. http://www.tamarindreefhotel.com/marina.html

The big advantage of Jones Marina is its proximity to town. It's right on the boardwalk. There should be offices available within a few blocks. It will also be about $250/month less than Green Cay for a 50' boat.
