MARINA JOBS
ISLANDER,
SOMEONE MENTIONED THE MARINA AND WORKING ON SOMEONES CHARTER BOAT AS A JOB WHEN THEY FIRST MOVED THERE, ANY INSIGHT ON THIS ? JUST CURIOUS. THANKS.
Kristy,
That is possible. If you have charter boat experience such as chef or mate, it is easy to find work most parts of the year. If not, you may become a steward on some of the day sail boats such as New Horizons or Limnos. Employment is a marina is also possible - wages are low, however - and it will lead to you meeting the people you need to meet. If you have a resume and would like to forward it to me, I will be happy to place it on the bulletin board in our clearing house where Captains will see it.
Best of luck.

pamela,
thanks for your help. i don't have any experience, just curious about it though. i plan on moving in august and am a little skeptical about moving without a job as that is not my nature. but i guess i will just have to wing it. i have talked to a few realtors about rental property and look at the daily news religiously for rentals and jobs. if you know of anything please let me know. thanks for your help. i really appreciate it.
If you are coming to the islands with no skills and no resume be certain to bring lots of fundage. There are a LOT of entry level positions at different business's but you will be working many, many hours and not be able to enjoy the island. So why bother? Get marketable skills in the US, build a resume that is marketable and then come. You can then find a job that will pay enough to enjoy the islands and not just come down here and wait on those who have planned.
You must have misunderstood, I have a resume and am currently in management in retail, I just want to take a break from 5 years of it and was considering other options. I don't have experience with marina.
Kristy,
An interesting place to start might be retail management for a shop in the marina ... American Yacht Harbor has all sorts of interesting shops which can use a good retail manager ... can send you a list of stores if you like.
Pamela.
Good Afternoon Pamela,
I have a few quick questions for you...what can one (with experience) expect to make as a mate on a day cruse? Would it be advantageous to pick up my six pack license before I head down?
Thank you,
Chad
Chad,
Mate should pay $75 plus tips to start. It wouldn't hurt to have your six pax license AND your STCW out of the way. That way, all you will have to learn is the cruising area. You are going to have to crew for a while .... if you don't mind cleaning, varnish work, etc. there is work here. Email me if I can be of further assistance.

Thank you for the information, it is greatly appreciated. I have one more question for you. Do you know where I might pick up my Captain's License once I get down to St. Thomas? I was thinking about picking up my Inland Captain's License (logged my 365 days on Lake Michigan), and then up-grading to the near shore or international after I log the necessary 90 days.
Again, thank you very much!
Chad
Yes, call Sea School in Florida. They have an instructor down here. I have the local number 340-771-5077 but not the 800 number. Call 800 directory assitance for it. The instructors name is Len Wahl down here. As I said, don't forget the STCW course. You spend a lot of time in foreign waters here. Best of luck. email me if you need anything further.
Pamela.
