Marilyn anniversary
What a different day it was 16 years ago! I was one of those stupid newcomers who wanted "to experience a hurricane." Someone should have taken me behind the barn and given me what-for!
It seemed we tracked storms every day that summer and we had just missed Luis as it swerved and hit St Maarten a week before. I remember listening to Sam Topp on Radio One until it was just too painful, then hiding in the bathroom all night. The unearthly sounds I never want to hear again. In the morning, there were no English-speaking radio stations, no power for two months, no telephone for 6 months, no law and order. The silver lining was the night sky.
Not a word in the Daily News today. I will not forget that time, anyway...
Yeah, nor will I.
Marilyn was a life changing experience. I don't ever want to go through that again.

We arrived on St. Thomas in January, '96, 4 months after Marilyn. I remember saying to my husband, as we approached STT, that I thought STT was known for it's RED roofs, not blue.......FEMA tarps, as far as the eye could see.
That Halloween a couple of friends and I made costumes from left over FEMA tarps - We did a great singing group - FEMA and the tarpettes! Needed some real fun by then!
