Cover story on the Avis today.

Big changes coming to Sunshine Mall!

In the article, they say that they hope to open by Christmas 2019.

AND they say to go on Facebook and tell them what stores we want - within reason - we can send the message to those retailers saying hey you have a customer on St Croix that wants you to come.

My picks are (yes I will post to their Facebook page 🙂

• Petco
• Panera Bread
• Whole Foods or Publix
• Bed Bath and Beyond
• Old Navy
• Zara

Winn Dixie.
I'm boycotting Publix since they donate huge amounts of money to the NRA.
Target
Pier 1
It would be nice to fly over to STX to shop and spend the day.

Personally, I don't think the market on St. Croix is big enough and income levels not high enough to sustain any of those stores except Publix.

Its definitely not big enough to support a Best Buy (people still buy electronics in stores?).

TJ Maxx might be doable since they cater to the budget conscience consumer.

Like OfficeMax and Home Depot, once the corporate trainers leave, customer service will go downhill quickly and people will just continue to buy online to avoid the teeth sucking.

I think the best we could hope for is another Nigel's 1-2-3 but not holding my breath.

COME ON, Petco is NEEDED here so bad!!!!! Tons of pet owners, Animal Shelter, others who fly animals off island, Real Cruzan Cats, Pets from Paradise, etc.

I think the best we could hope for is another Nigel's 1-2-3 but not holding my breath.

When they built Home Depot on St Croix there was all that talk & promises to have a Save A Lot store & some other stores right beside it, like a mall concept. Last time I checked ther are NADA -ZERO other stores.

So IMO this Avis article is a pipe dream. BTW Bed Bath & Beyond is going bankrupt in the states & closing stores.

They never did. They supported a candidate who supported the NRA. But you know how the narrative goes....

That was before I was here! I alone could keep one in business.

The Burger King was announced last election by one of the senators i don't remember which one. Typical election excitement, then nada.

That's funny, since I boycott all businesses who don't support the NRA. The 2nd amendment exists for a reason--study your US history to find out.

Most of these businesses will not come here. A population of 50k, with a low median income is not going to draw a major retailer. I could see Wal-mart coming if the Kmarts close, which is inevitable at this point. Petco or Petsmart possibly. A Walmart Super center would be great due to their low price philosophy. It may actually get the current supermarkets to become better on prices and selection. I'm guessing that HD does about 20-25 million in sales pre-hurricane. Thats really low for them, so it would be all about tax incentives and ensuring they get the proper ROI. As one poster stated, Bed Bath and Beyond is going out of business and is to pricey for the average consumer. I don't believe Target would do well either, again based on demographics. Need to take the emotion out of this and think like a business leader.

Only on this message board could a discussion about a shopping center devolve into NRA bashing!

LOL...
I'm from St. Croix, currently living in Florida (can't wait to come back home, BTW)...
Every time I go to Best Buy, it is full of people buying electronics.

Your comment about income levels is insulting. BTW, the minimum wage on St. Croix is higher than what it is in Florida.

Customer service sucks in a lot of places. I shop at Publix mainly because I don't get treated like a criminal there just because of my skin color. You'd be amazed at how many times I've had my change literally thrown at me because people think the black rubs off.

While you're busy bashing St. Croix, she's rising like a Phoenix.

It is what it is. If the VI was an attractive environment for retailers, they would already be here. But it's not. I wasn't "bashing" St. Croix, just pointing out reality.

And yes, St. Croix is rising nicely these days. But, even at its economic peak several years ago, none of those retailers choose to come to STX during their growth years. Now that these retailers are downsizing and closing stores, what makes you think they'll be coming here now? Will the lack of air conditioning in Sunshine Mall attract them? Lol...
