making the move
My boyfriend has been accepted to the university for the fall semester, we will be moving mid-july. We have been doing research through different web-sites, ordered the settlers guide and have found this message board most helpful. A few questions I have not found answers to. We are shipping household goods and furniture, from what I've read termits are a problem, some of my furniture is wood, good or bad idea to bring it? We are aware that finding jobs will take some time, so cash will be tight for a couple months, wondering about storage places for our stufff until we find a place to live and also are there any campgrounds, we are not above ruffing it to save a few $'s, as long as we can shower somewhere. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to the move!

Wood furniture should not be a problem as termites usually go for structure. As for storage, you are better off finding a place first before shipping stuff down. You also forgot to mention what island. STX or STT? I am assuming this based on your mention of university which does not exist on STJ. If I remember correctly, there are no campgrounds on St.Thomas. St. John does and I do not know much about St.Croix. Maybe someone else on this board could help?
We will be in St. Thomas. I did some research today and found 2 campgrounds on St. John and I beleive you are right about there not being any on St. Thomas. Thanks for the info................
Another option would be to temporarily rent a room instead of an apartment. Or better yet you could ask the university about housing options. They probably could point you in the right direction. Have you checked their website?
Sea Shell and Copper,
Hello. Is it possiable for you to pack up all your things to ship and then you both come down secure an apartment and then tell a friend or family to ship. Or how long does the transit process take from the day you ship to getting to the VI?
Termits are not a huge huge problem but it does exist. Here is my over approximately 25-30 🙂 year period - termits got into a couple wooden doors- maybe 3 outside doors and three inside doors, three desk, a couple closet doors (about 6-8), about 3 head set and bed, 4 dressers, 6 nightstands.... basically they got into the door first I think then migrated to the pieces of furniture before we caught on - and be then well - it was a problem... and then the whole rooms furniture had to be sprayed, they came back and then eventually just replaced the peices. Looking at the number of peices of furnitture it does seem like a lot - LOL. In any case yes bring your furniture you don't have too many options for furniture here so having yours is a good thing. Yes there are places to store furniture and things. Campgrounds are on St. John - which would require commuting to St. Thomas (walking, hitching, taxing - one of those.. then the ferry to St. Thomas... to look for jobs an apartments ....)
