Can anyone tell me where to send mail if I change my address and do not have a PO box over there yet? Is there a general delivery. Would I need to call someone? Thanks much.

Hi, Lis

Some parts of the island get mail via USPS delivery- some do not. Most people I know use a PO Box of one sort or another.

You don't specify which island, so I'm hazarding a guess- St. Thomas?

Here, you can get a personal mail box (PMB) at a mail delivery service like Nisky Mailboxes (sort of close to the airport) or Red Hook Mail Services (not sure if that's the right name or not- check the phone book online).

If you know someone here already, you might be able to send your mail to their mailing address, then forward once you get your own. If not, the best bet would be to open your own. Not sure if a mailing service will open your account over the phone- but you could certainly call and find out!

Best,

LR

If we're talking St.Thomas, and wer're talking East End - yes, Red Hook Mail Service is the name of it, on the second floor, backside of the building across from Duffy's Love Shack.

The way it works is - when you arrive, and I stress when you arrive - you go in person, fill out the form, pay $15 for your first month and you're set. What you're set up with is first, General Delivery, until such time as a box becomes available for you. In my case (arrived on island in October) it was only a couple of months.

General Delivery simply means that each time you come to check your mail, you tell them who you are and they go through the alphabetically sorted mail to find yours. Works really well.

Lis,
I dont know which part of the Island you are planning to live on but I set up a mailing address at the Red Hook Mailing Center before I moved down. Barbara was kind enough to begin accepting my mail before I got here or paid her a dime. Even though I now live on the North Side, I still go to Red Hook because they are dependable and have always taken good care of me.

Given your interest and Eric's post that he set it up before he got here: this is the phone number for Red Hook Mail Services - 340-779-1890 e-mail address is: paradiseconneciton@hotmail.com fax number 340-775-3590.

I would have posted these originally, just wasn't aware you wanted to set it up before you arrived or if it was possible.

Good luck.

Paul - sorry to correct you - email is paradiseconnection@hotmail.com

Lis - if you are going to be on the other side (north or subbase areas) call mike at Flagship 340-774-5630 and he can begin taking mail also. They are also open on Sundays for half the year - makes getting the mail easier. They are near Frenchtown.

what if someone needs more than a PO Box in order to cancel a phone contract and to not be charged the early cancellation fees?

Hello Ann,

What do you mean? Most people here use a post office box rather then street delivery (which is not available island-wide).

Well, I have verizon here but heard that they don't have coverage on the Island but was told if I cancel i would be charged a cancel fee unless I have proof of a change of address. They said PO Boxes are not good enough.

Most people use WAPA or cable bills or a signed lease to verify physical address.
