I was interested in the Maho Bay Work Program. Can anyone tell me anything more about it than what is on their website? I am looking to move to St. John in June and thought it might be a good way to start. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Hello Scott,

Don't know if you read it already but Story 31 in our What to Expect section is by someone that went through the Maho Program.

Any idea if it is difficult to get into the program as they make it sound on the website? I went through the program in 1996 and I remember 3 people hearing about the program after showing up on the island and being able to enter immediately.

The website for the program is at the following website:
http://www.maho.org/WorkExchange.cfm
I went through the program in 1996 and it was a fun experience. As of then, most of the people they hired for full time jobs went through the program. This is a convient program for those who are interested in moving to St. John or St. Thomas because it allows you to experience the islands at a very low cost without having to find a job while still on the mainland. One of the main requirements for the program is that you have to be willing to stay for at least a month, they don't want to spend a lot of time training someone who is only going to stay for a week. A warning for those who never have stayed at Maho, there are a lot of stairs, particularly if you are working there. Some of my time there in 1996 ended up being hurricane cleanup, which can become tiring when carrying large quantities of material up and down hundreds of steps a trip. Still, I would recommend this for anyone interested in moving to the area or just interested in spending some time on the island at very low cost.
