Invisipeeps,

I was given a lovely gift of a MacBook by a friend who says "now you are really computing". Well, now my head is really exploding.

I downloaded the driver for a HP5780 Office Jet All in One. I get as far as "Install" then it asks if I want to install some special software that will allow me to participate in some sort of nonsense with HP. I have tried to tell it yes. I have tried to tell it no. It just stalls. When I hit install this screen (above) comes up and after I have done that it does NOTHING!

I've tried the on line support techs on chats but they do not support the MAC operating system.

Any words of wisdom from the geeks out there! HELP!

Pamela

u have to use safari for a mac...they also support firefox, which you can download for free.
they do not support windows and internet explorer.
if you download those you are endangering the security of the mac.
with the two search engines above, you can do almost everything.
also...if you need to use microsoft office, you need to get microsoft office for mac.

Thanks, Irijah,

I am getting the hang of Safari. This lovely gift ( I keep saying that because I don't want to sound like I am complaining about having to learn the new stuff) came with Microsoft Office 2008, I works and all sorts of cool stuff. My main problems are Mail and getting a printer to work. I shall continue making baby steps. It is funny for someone who has worked windows since they have been around to try and wrap her mind around this one. So far, I love it despite some of the language I have used towards the machine in the last two weeks.

Thanks again.

Pamela

Pamela,
Once you get the hang of it I think You'll really like it. I was a windows convert and never looked back. If you can, take the time to go over some of the 'help' items to get yourself more acquainted on how things work on a Mac. Just bought a Mac Book Pro to bring with me to the islands in September and am going to be busy with Web Page Design. They're great. Just keep cussing and give it some time. :}

That's what everyone tells me ... YOU WILL LOVE IT! To be honest, I can see how much more powerful it is than my PC laptop but dang .... did they have to use a different language. Right now I picture the "window gods" giggling as they listen to my exhaust my not inconsiderable vocabulary of curse words. Thanks for the encouragement.

pamela, your issue appears to be "known", even if unacknowledged:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=392257 - view this thread for possible workarounds.

i am using an hp printer, even wirelessly, with no issue on installation even after upgrading from tiger to leopard. which mac os are you using? click the apple and go to about this mac.

get the version number, and also whether it is a ppc (power pc) or intel (x86). i find that intel macs seem to be more compatible with more things going forward for me... i'd like to think it's intel.

let us know if you find anything that resolves your issue, it may help someone else as people often search forums such as this one for answers to all kinds of things...

i am also curious as to whether any of the solutions turn out to work for you. i am using an hp officejet j4680 all in one for my macbook pro, and setup for me was as easy as pie.

Did you get the printer to work? Click on the apple (upper left screen), Go to: System Preferences/print & Fax/(then '+ add printer'), look for your printer, If not located, download the drivers from HP for your model. Then, Wa-Laa, your printer should work like a, ahem, pc...

Let me know if that works or you need more 'therapy'...

BTW, if you have the install disk, that makes it much more 'better'er'

Thank you. Printer sort of installed. Software was not there for this version. Downloaded it. Printer is old - 2 years - OfficeJet 5780 All in One but not on the list of installed drivers.

Now the printer is printing reams of nonsense. Haven't figure it out yet. I can scan but not print. Any ideas?

Wish there was a head exploding icon. I would be soooooo behind it!

pamela,

i found a driver for this printer, but it says it works for mac osx 10.3 and 10.4, so find out what version of the mac operating system you are running... maybe not compatible???

If it's a new Mac Book it's probably running Leopard version 10.5.? Click on the apple and click, about this computer. Should pop up with the version you're running. Click more info and it will tell you things like: hard drive space, ram, printers, etc.

The printer may be too old for the OS on your computer but if it scans it should print. Try reinstalling the driver.

I'll work on the exploding head icon :}

I like the one where the smiley head actually lights itself on fire and blows up .. .that is sort of what this feels like. Thank you Trade!

I haven't messed with the printer again. I've emailed the stuff to my other computer then printed it from there. Now is only I had a third set up I could really have some FUN!

I don't have time to pursue this, so I've been reluctant to jump in.... but:
- if you have ichat, and an ichat account (doesn't cost a dime)
- and you find someone knowledgeable on this topic, that also has Mac ichat
- you can run ichat; start ichat session with the helper person; then share your desktop with the helper person
- then the helper person can fix your computer as if they were sitting right at your keyboard

hope that helps...

If the printer doesn't have a minimalist design with sleek lines and soft edges then your Mac will probably refuse to connect with it since the printer is obviously not worthy to be associated with it, MacBooks are snobby like that.

As usual, I am sure the problem is between the chair and the keyboard. Uninstalled, reinstalled and working great. I am overthinking the transition into this strange land of MAC.

Thanks for all the help.

great pamela, glad the printer is working now!

so, you took a deep breath, backed up, and went in again (tu)and got it done. this is what happens for just about everyone, and congratulations. you are halfway there. starting again is always good on any operating system.

Contrats! For your next assignment try changing your desktop background from the colorful space scene to one of your own photographs...

You have 30 minutes...

Begin, now...
