It took us a while to get here, but we finally made it! The move itself was a bit hard driving from Austin, Texas to West Palm Beach and then to Miami. We stayed at the Emerald Beach Resort for about 8 - 9 days while waiting to move into our house. We have a nice place on the North side by four corners, and the views are awesome! We didn't have any problems with WAPA, Customs, the DMV, or Direct TV. High Speed wireless Internet up and running in no time. I'm teaching at the High School and love it! And to think we did this move with our dog and 2 cats.
We have found that going with the flow is the only way for a stress free move to the island. Everyone we have met has been very helpful, and nice. I guess it's all in the attitude...
Cheers all!

Welcome! So, pets are allowed at Emerald Beach? Good to know. Good luck to you! Yes, as EE said, keep us posted on how everything goes as you live here longer. 🙂

Grats on the move!

Now, I want to pick your brain (and your experience)! I just so happen to have 2 cats and one dog, too, AND I'm coming from Dallas, TX. How long did it take you to find a place? Did you purchase or buy? Did Emerald Beach accodate all your pets? (I plan on just bringing the dog first).

Right now, my big concern is finding a place for a couple/few weeks that will allow dogs. Then, finding a permanent place I can have the pup, and hopefully my two cats, too.

Any and all suggestions / tips would be helpful. I'm just a single guy, working on the move down there (aiming for mid April).

guice: I just realized that your arrival is going to be in the middle of a very unproductive period for any government transactions you might have. The Thursday through Monday surrounding Easter and the first week in May (Carnival) will have many government offices basically shut down. Plan accordingly!

Thanks for the warning; shouldn't be much, if any. DMV can wait up to 3 months. WAPA maybe, depending on time frame, but I can't imagine them shutting down for Easter, and not accepting new enrollments (am I mistaken?). But that's it. Dealt is private; which will handle dog transport, too. Accommodations are all private party (no section-8 here). And I don't expect to start shipping my items down until I get a perm apartment/location. I should be good. I don't expect anything to be affected, unless I'm seriously under estimating your May carnival (first I've heard of it).

You might want to prepare for your imagination and estimates to be greatly expanded. 😮

LOL! The Virgin Islands will close down shop and party for any reason. There are so many holidays here, it's hard to keep up with them all.

guice: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday are all government holidays. On Good Friday, you are not allowed to buy a drink until 4:30 pm. Separation of church and state has not reached the Caribbean.

Easter Monday? That's a new one. Interesting. Well, that's good to know. I like European holiday structures anyway. More days off is a Win! (especially down there)

Interesting, can't buy drinks until 4:30pm. I actually find it funnier that they reinstate the ability to drink -- "The people won't have it; they MUST be able to drink. We'll reinstate drinking at 4:30pm just in time for happy hour." lol

Ronnie: I think the time has been extended over the years.

guice: I would like you to post a month after you have moved here.

Good morning all,
Nothing really new to post except that my neighbor, who is a lobster fisherman brought us two really nice lobsters as a "welcome to St. Thomas gift." I love this place and the people! 😎

I am a teacher and my husband and I are wanting to move to the island in the next several years. I was wondering how you went about getting your job. Did you go down there are were you able to do internet research to find out about positions available? Thanks!
