Okay, I am just under 2 months out from boarding my flight to St. Thomas. I have most my ducks in a row. I have a game plan of the order I am going to get things done. I am shedding down on what I think will be unnecessary items that I won't need to cut down on moving costs.

I want a game plan for rental hunting. I know not to make a decision before seeing it in person and that is what I plan to do, but I would like a few places to have on my list to check out. I came across Lovenlund Apartments for low income residents. I am waiting for their reply for qualifications of what low income is considered.

My question is, what is the local review about it. I have read a few online articles but for the most part it seems too good to be true. Does anyone have any insight?

If the info helps I am a single male, I will be 26 when I get there, I have a degree and a job lined up for when I arrive.

You're not a resident of the USVI until you've legally established residency. You don't qualify to apply for low income housing on that basis.

At 26 years old, able bodied and with a job lined up you don't qualify. This affordable housing is for qualified low income VI residents such as the elderly, infirm and/or those dependent on local and Federal social service programs.

ThEre are no qualifications to meet at Lovenlund other than being employed. They are not government owned. They are run by a private company. You stand zero chance of getting an apartment there since apparently, they have no occupancy, no waiting list, and will not let you even fill an application out. I tried. More than once. Forget it and move along.

Interesting. I guess I wrongly assumed there were restrictions since, "The projects are being developed through the V.I. Housing Finance Authority but required Senate approval because developers receive government tax credits to offset the costs of construction."

Not according to the people there. I asked numerous questions. The only requirement is proof of employment. She even said, "we aren't 'low income' housing, we are mid income"

Not sure why that's relevant as the OP gave no indication that he's receiving Section 8 assistance but yes, it is transferable if you move to a new location. Details can be found online.

Okay so...it said that low income applied to SOME of its units. I did not mean for that to be the focus of the conversation. I have already message them in regards to that.

I just wanted to know the local review of the apartment complex. Sorry if that was unclear in the original post.

Thank you Sparty for the heads up, I think I will try talking to them when I get there anyways just to see how my dice roll. Is there anyone on here that does live there now and has a review of them?

It's probably moot to consider Lovenlund when it seems they have no vacancies and no waiting list but did you ever do the PMV you planned and mentioned in a previous post? Hopefully you found a temporary place to stay while you get settled, get a vehicle and find your way around the island. You're coming at a good time of year as there are plenty of rentals being advertised and more listings every week as slow season comes upon us. Good luck with the move!

My wife has coworkers who live at both this property and another managed by same group up the hill from Lionel Roberts Stadium in town. They get good reviews from both. Wishing you luck. The idea of paying less than half f what I pay now for more rooms appealed to me, but it isn't meant to be there.

Yes, it was basically pointless to look at what was available though because it would be filled by the time I needed it. I did look at some areas that would be nice to live, but to be honest I will get what I can take and afford the first year. My budget will be tighter with the move. Next year when I won't have that additional knock in my budget from moving, I can afford something more expensive and by them I will definitely have a feel for what area of the island I would like to live.

I have decided to stay at Rhoda's when I get there. They actually informed me of some semi-private rooms that I will stay at if they are available. If not I will stay in the Hostel. My truck will be shipped in with my belonging.

I lived in Puerto Rico for 3 years so I was hoping for a similar PMV experience as to living there. It has its pros and cons on both sides, but nothing I saw strayed me away.

I currently live in a town of 500 people in the middle of the woods. There is one gas station that sells groceries as well. I have been here for 3 years so St. Thomas seems like a major city compared to this, haha. But I also used to live 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C. So I can handle urban and rural settings.

Rhoda's is an excellent choice and affords easy access to both Red Hook and town, depending on where you'll be teaching. A good place to start out while you get settled with the added benefit of being around people in the complex who can be of great help. I'm sure they'll make you feel very welcome!

If you need to store any of your belongings temporarily, I highly recommend Courtyard Self Storage which is a few miles up the road in Smith Bay. Very secure, reasonable rates.

Luckily I won't have too much. Clothes, musical instruments, tools, and kitchen supplies. But I will need a place to store things so I will definitely check into them. Thank you for the recommendation!
