Looking for the low-down on no-see-ums and other pesky bugs
Hello all,
I was hoping some of you could educate me a bit on the pest situation here. I live in Judith's Fancy, I went for a walk last night and ran into a cloud of no-see-ums. Luckily we have not had any of these little bastards at our house, which makes me wonder: is the occurrence of pests like these somehow tied to elevation and/ or distance away from the water? We eventually want to buy a house here (probably in the Fancy) and these are important factors to consider. In addition to the mosquitoes and no-see-ums, the other thing I wonder about is the saltiness of the air. Is there any significant difference in the saltiness of the air depending on elevation in addition to distance to the water?
Thanks in advance! A
Rain and humidity have more to do with mosquitoes and no-see-ums than anything else. Dusk and dawn are the bad times.
As far as salt goes, the closer you are to the water thr greater your salt/rust problems are. And if you are close enough to get spray, that is the worst. Some people polish their appliances with car wax and that seems to help.
Let me start by saying I have several friends and clients in Judith's Fancy and I've possibly be in half the homes in the neighborhood. The neighborhood has alot going for it. Large lots, great views from some lots, nice homes, safe to walk or run, beach, surfing, security..............................
But...........Since you're asking about saltiness, here ya go. Judith's Fancy has the worst salt spray on the island. In my yrs of servicing satellite dishes on island the ones in JF rust the worst. You have the spray and mist from all the breakers along Long Reef.
The higher and farther from the water the better it gets. Innovative seems to have a hard time keeping phones and cable working in there too. I hear it all the time. That salt spray from Long Reef carries all the way up to Clairmont and Vista Concordia to the west.
To the other extreme the waterfront dishes in F'sted hold up very well. Prevailing winds and no breaking waves make a big difference.
It's usually the support arms and adjusment bolts are the first to go. Actually encountered 2 dishes in JF that fell off the house because the mounting pipes rusted completely through. I've seen one year old appliances in JF rusting, lighting fixtures falling off, rebar busting the concrete off houses, few year old ac units that look like they're 20 yrs old, sliding doors or windows you can't see through because of the salt. Often with a remark "We just cleaned those! ARG!"

Some cool classic rust buckets in this video!

We stayed at the Waves of Cane Bay when we first moved here 7 years ago. They have nice little kitchens in the rooms, but I was appalled at the amount of rust on the appliances especially the stove. The owner at the time told me most of the appliances were less than 5 years old!! I didn't believe her!! Little did I know.
I went for a walk last night and ran into a cloud of no-see-ums.
How could you tell? :@)
Newbie here, moving to STT in 2 weeks. Umm, what ARE no-see-ums?? Do they bite/sting/itch like mosquitos?
tiny black flying bugs that bite and cause a bad itch. Like a black fly or a gnat. They seem to be more bothersome near the coast.
Thanks, Bombi. They sound FABULOUS!! :/

Avon skin so soft works ok as a repellent but Deet works the best. They come and go and get bad when it's wet. They come out at dusk
They taste like chicken :-o:P
I found OFF! Active works well - and it smells kinda nice! K-Mart sells it for like $4 a bottle.
