Looking for a summer job.
I'm looking for a summer job in STX. I was told by a frequent user of this board that two people who go by the names (Linda J and Ric, two people who post on this forum) who both work at the Buccanneer might be able to help me. If you read this and can help, lets talk through e-mail.

thanks,

That would be me and my husband. We (and Linda from Michigan) work at a hotel on STX. The hotel is always looking for likely applicants for a variety of jobs. What do you do? Summer is the slow(er) season in the Caribbean and most hotels would rather hire permanent rather than temp employees, but again, it all depends on what is needed.
Give me a little more info.
Linda J
Hi Linda,
This will be for next summer. early may through mid august. I am a chef at restruant right now but before that I dished and bused. I can do anything really, anytime type of cleaning or what not. landscaping I have some experience in. I'm an avid golfer so I can work on a course too prolly. If it's something I have never done Im a quick learner. I Just wanna live on the island for a few months before I ever move there. I'm looking to just work for very little or for free as long as I am provided a place to stay and food in my stomach. I have a great work ethic, oyu wont be dissapointed.I'm 20 years old trying to explore and understand the island better.
Sounds great. My suggestion is to come on down. You should have enough money to keep going while you find a job. Don't expect to find a job before arriving, employers will want to see you on-island before considering you. Find a temp place to stay, then the job, and then ask the other employees about permanent lodging.
Do you mean this year?? It's already the middle of May.
Good luck.
Hello,
This is my first time posting to a discussion board. I am looking on some information on teaching in STX. I just finished student teaching in Colorado and now I am looking for a full time position. I have visited the Department of Human Resources web page and printed off an application that I will be mailing in the next couple of days. I was wondering if anyone knew what the schools were like on STX? Are there many teaching position there? I plan on relocating as soon as I can find a position, any suggestions?
Thanks.
I'm talking about summer 07'. Im coming down in 5 weeks for my regular summer trip. Maybe we could meet eachother if your not too busy.
Thanks,
Matt
I taught on ST Thomas for about two years. I have been to all four islands, and to Water Island and STX for a few educational activties with my students from STT. Is there any reason why you chose STX.
Most likely, you will want to teach at a private school unless you are teaching lower than 6th grade. The public schools are pretty bad. The middle school on STT was once referred to as "little viatnam." The money sucks at private school but you can compensate for that with tutoring (my math teach friend charged $50 an hour, and was overbooked) or by waitressing/bartending.
Fax your cover letter and resume direcly to the schools. Their contact info is on this site.
Bob
Bob2: I really didn't have a specific reason for wanting to teach on STX. I would like to teach 1st or 2nd grade. I am applying to the public school district on STX. I will also fax a cover letter and resume to the private schools on this site. Thanks for the advice.
STX and STT are significantly different in regards to economy, life style, night life, etc.... Make sure you do your research before your move.
For example, it is much easier to take weekend trips to water island, st john, tortolla, virgen gorda, etc...than it is from ST. Croix. Trust me, its both fun and relaxing to get away from the kids and and your island,to know your students are not within several miles.
Bob2, I really hate when people bash the public schools on St. Thomas! I've been teaching at Charlotte Amalie High School for the past 2 years and can cite so many wonderful accomplishments of our students. I am the technology coordinator/webmaster at the school (www.cahsvi.com) and last week (Friday) I brought 15 students to UVI for the Regional Science Fair. In the end, we brought home 10 trophies for our school, which I believe is more than any other school that competed. CAHS students also won the Regional Science Quiz Bowl, beating out the private schools and earning a trip to compete nationally in Philadelphia. I will be travelling with 3 CAHS students this summer to San Diego, to the National Educational Computer Conference (NECC) as we have been selected as presenters for the Student Showcase. Here is a link to our presentation- http://center.uoregon.edu/ISTE/NECC2006/program/search_results_details.php?sessionid=17920833
Also, if you do get a chance to visit our school site, you will see a picture of our Territory-wide teacher of the year, Ms. Georgia Francis, along with Pres. and Mrs. Bush.
I agree with Sbarber. There are so many people who chose to share their opinion about the negative when it comes to VI Public Schools. I have shared before that very few public schools come without challenges these days. I worked in Fairfax County Public Schools in Northern Virginia( a school system which is considered to be one of the best in the county) and while the facilities and resources were nice, the challeges were the same as what I've seen in many other urban school systems including homlessness, teenage pregnancy, iliteracy, abuse and neglect, drop out rates, gangs, poor atendance, poor behaviors, violence, substance use and abuse, lack of parental and community support, limited resources for students with special needs and giftedness, low expectations for students with diverse back grounds, cultures and ethnicities, ocial promotion, high teacher turn over, critical need for teachers in math, science, and special eduucation, limited male role models in the classroom, low state test scores from various sub groups, and unhealthy and unsafe learning conditions for students and staff.
I've attended national leadership conferences and the the concerns are the same. VI shares those same concerns and more. As we all know, we very rarely hear about the positive accomplishments that occur in schools systems. Please don't believe that any schools system, private school, or charter school program that does not have the grade A image award does not have grade A students, teachers, administrators. As school personnel your effectiveness sometimes depends on what contract you have decided to sign. Two teachers can come from the same college if one signs a contract in Washington DC, he/she might be considered a substandard teacher by the media if the other teacher signed with Montgomery County Maryland Public school 5 miles away he/she might be considered to be your better teacher. Both however have the same training, the same credentials, and so on.
I personnally would like to see more citizens take an active and direct role in the education of the children who attend public schools or any school setting for that matter. I think that would help to change the conditions that are often spoken about when we think about our schools today. One other thing public schools crack down on the credentials that are required by No Child Left Behind and the Individual With Disabilities Education Act. Public schools are required to provide instruction to ALL students despite limitations or learning style differences that some children may have.
When teachers are inquiring about teaching opportunities in the VI or anywhere else, I recommend that they rely on what they have been taught in their teacher preparation classes and workshops/trainings as they search for the best and most rewarding situation for themselves. Be creative, open minded and research all possibilities and avenues. The biggest reward is when that student gets it in the worse or best conditions. Later today I might share the accomplishments of the schools/students/teachers in STX.
Thanks Melody for your thoughtful response and glad to see that you are making strides in the STX school system. I will be the technology liason at the Summer Institute/National Writing Project for two weeks on STX this summer, so maybe we can finally meet! PM or email me when you get a chance.
I strongly agree with your comment about encouraging more citizens to take an active and direct role in public school education. I have to take a minute and thank the Rotary Club of St. Thomas, who recently renovated the Career Center at CAHS. We now have new blinds, countertops, paint, chairs and 15 flatscreen computers. We are planning on having the media in next week for our grand opening. I supervise this lab space and as soon as the students walk in, they comment on how great the room looks and express that the renovations make them feel like the community really cares about their education. They take pride in their school and anyone that is a CAHS graduate knows all about our "Chicken Hawk Pride".

In regards to your students' awards, statistically that makes sense: more students, more students to choose from.
In short, is the graduating class of All Saints plus Antilles plus Peter and Paul greater or smaller than the graduating class of your CAHS?
This is how the private schools even up in football, right?
