hard to find longer term car/suv rental information ... pricing, availability, terms, etc.
thoughts or recommendations ?

Hey newtoyou, you are pretty much SOL if you just now looking. Unless you had a reservation in place months ago for long term rental the rentals vehicles are taken by FEMA, Snowbirds, & other relief workers. Only short term (a few days) rentals are available.

relocating to the island - likely 6 months. any other suggestions?

Some car rentals allow long term leases. Right now, with the lack of the volume of tourism to our islands due to being still in hurricane recovery mode, you may find companies more willing to lease longer term.
Check around.
I doubt it'll be inexpensive.
Don't get something too low to ground. Out potholes are pits.

You'll need additional insurance as well. Personal auto policies won't cover rentals longer than a few weeks, I think it varies by company.

Buy an island beater car.
Sell it when you leave. If it still runs and remains undamaged, you'll get what you paid back.
