location
I already asked about a certain location and I hope no one minds that I'm asking again about a different location.....but I'm just trying to get an idea for the island. I'm a little nervous about moving down there, just b/c I will be coming on my own.......I'm pretty well travelled having been to over ten countries, however I am only 24/female and have only lived alone once before. I will be bringing my very large dog Charlie with me, but I still would like to live in a somewhat secure area. I am used to some crime, considering I was born and raised in Washington DC.....but again, being alone, I don't want to be in an incredibly crime ridden area. I will be coming for two (maybe three) pre-move visits within the next year so I know I will get a better idea for the island then.
So does anyone know anything about FLORA ST??????
Hello Jenny,
Never heard of it. Which doesn't necessarily mean much considering locals (myself included) don't regularly use street names or numbers... I know very few street names... actually can't think of any at this point... a few hills, drives, roads... a hah... Main Street, Back Street... thought of two. A few of the moving stories mention how bad of directions we give... and how they all include a big mango tree, a white wall, someones house and a landmark of some sort.
In any case....
Do you know what area Flora St. is in?

Nope, I have no idea and no of course I can't find the website I was looking at. No worries, like I said I have plenty of time. I might even have to schedule a trip before the end of the year...........that's if I can get enough comp time at work....I kinda already used up all my vacation time this year. At least I had some very worth while trips.....Ireland, London, Amsterdam, Eastern Mexico, Grand Cayman, and then Jamaica for a wedding. Now, to get to USVI. I don't think I can take much more here. It's already in the low 70's and raining....Fall and leftover Francis have arrived to the DC metro area. It's gray, rainy and chilly......oh to be in the warm caribbean......
Would anyone be willing to meet myself and a friend or two when I come to visit???? Just for dinner/drinks or some sightseeing, tour around some of the island or whatever anyone would want to do. I would just like to get an idea of life on the island in person, face to face.
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!! You guys have already given me a wealth of information.
Jenny
Hey Jenny,
I'm a DC escapee (we arrived down here in late May), so I know exactly what you're saying about not being able to take it anymore. 🙂
Would be happy to meet with you, but I get the impression you're heading for St. Thomas -- and we're on St.. Croix. Should you decide to check out the big island, even for just a day, let us know and we'll arrange to get together with you.

P.S. Had to laugh out loud at Islander's post, only because it's so true! When we came on a pre-move visit, we got our share of island directions -- all of ours, however, seemed to center around rusty tanks, banners that were tied to fences, and the phrase "just head down ta road a ways -- ya can't miss it." said with a warm smile and in that lovely lyrical West Indian/Caribbean/hint of Jamaican accent. Well, Islander, we've now become those folks (minus the enchanting accent), and it only took about a week for us to be converted. The only directions that actually get people to our place involve a school, the ruins of an old plantation-era mill, some mailboxes, a white picket fence and a cluster of coconut trees. 🙂
I would definitely love to get a peak at all the islands during at least one of my trips. It's been years since I've been to the USVI's so I'm going to try to get down there as much as possible before my big move. All the islands look lovely so I haven't narrowed down which island I'm going to choose, I have just been under the impression that job opportunities will be better in St. Thomas.....am I correct in this assumption or are jobs just as plentiful on STX??????
Jenny
I think it all depends on what kind of job you have or seek. From what I have read most of the jobs on St Thomas are related to the Hotel industry. Check out the Vi Daily to see what is offered. After a wile you will see what kind of jobs you can find. STX is of course the biggest of the 3 islands. One major investor just bought a lot of land on STX. He is plaining a convention center, gambling casino, commercial and private residence houseing. I believe he is hoping to get started no later than 2010. He things it will take him that long to get all the building permits. That kind of developement can bring a whole lot of new business to STX. Unemployment on STT is about 7% and STX has about 10%

Thank you.....
I have actually been checking out the newspaper daily. Right now I work for the airline industry so finding a job in that field would be nice. But I am not going to be picky at all. I just desperately need to get out of DC, the people, the area, everything is sucking the life out of me. : (
again, thank you to everyone for your help.
