Does anyone know of a car rental agency of STT that offers local discounts?

I don't know of any but I'd be surprised if youcouldn't get a good deal these days but also check with Hotwire.

I used Hotwire on my recent trip to the states. I was really impressed. I had originally made a car rental resv. at something like $247 for the week with Alamo, PLUS $10 a day for an additional driver, even though we are married. At the last minute, I decided to try Hotwire. I got $179, same car type with Enterprise. No charge for the second driver. Hugh difference!

Also used them to book a couple of hotel rooms. It's a little scary, since you have no idea what hotel you are getting until you have already paid in full, and they are very clear that there will be no refund for anything. We were very pleased. Got a Quality Inn in Ft. Lauderdale area for $37 (including breakfast) and a Hilton in Orlando for $45. Both properties were very nice.

If anyone gets a "good deal" please let me know......October rates are running over $350/week for a compact.....couldn't get a compact car from Hertz for the 2nd & 3rd week in January 2010 (and I tried to book in May).

You would think that with the current economy that rental cars would be cheaper....it seems that their pricing is going in the opposite direction.....I guess it has a lot to do with taxis rates.....the rental agencies know how expensive the taxis are and have adjusted their rates accordingly.

Perhaps with the current economy some car rental places have decreased their pool of cars.

Perhaps, but they haven't lowered the prices on the larger vehicles.

Rather than decrease rental charges perhaps they've decreased overhead costs by reducing their pool of vehicles. A smaller pool means most cars are on the road, so demand and supply are balanced and there's no need to reduce rental charges. Also, larger vehicles have always been popular with families and couples traveling together, and with fewer of them in the rental pool, there's no reason for them to be singled out for reduced rates.
