lobster spots
hey folks,
i was wondering if anyone knew of a place near st. thomas that is a good spot to go catch a few lobsters. there are two of us that are going to rent a tank and a boat and go out for a day to catch dinner for that night. i was wondering if anyone could reccomend a spot. also if anyone knows the laws for catching lobster. thanks. mike
Hello Michael,
The laws I can help you with, the spots - not sure.
It is against the law - illegal to spear fish for lobsters in all territorial waters. A diver down flag must be displayed while diving or snorkeling. Size limit for spiny lobster is 3.5 caraspace... Area you can take them in are Territorial waters and in the National Park areas that allow you can only take 2 per day. Lobster is to be captured only by hand, snare or trap. Females with eggs must be returned to the sea. Lobsters must be landed whole.

And to add to Islander's comments...I don't think anyone is going to share their lobster holes with you, especially on the Imternet! 😉
lol. yeah i thought that would be the case, east ender. but hey i had to try right? thanks for the info on the laws, any info helps, does anyone know any good ways to find them, other than simply looking. like, could i use bait of any kind, or anything like that, that is legal. im just looking for any info possible o. i have never been lobster diving so anything helps. once again thatnks. mike
I was suprised how much Lobsters where at some resteruants, I saw a wedding group get smashed for $60 lobsters, when i know they were just jumping off the dock and pulling them up
When we stay at the Renaissance Grand Beach Hotel we would walk or drive over to the turn off to Coral World, if you look at a map it is where rt 38 and 388 (Coral World rd) meet. There are guys there almost every Monday-Saturday selling fish and lobsters out of the back of trucks. Need to go early, 7am-ish, maybe 730am to see if the'lobster guy' was there, don't remember their name, but the same 2 guys have been at this spot for years. Bought live lobster all summer at $6.00/lb. A far cry vs the restaurant, and a lot cheaper and easier than renting tanks and a boat to do it yourself. Would buy several and kill them by putting in cooler with ice to freeze them vs boiling them live. The meat seems sweeter this way and more humane as well. If the 'lobster guy' doesn't sell all the live ones, he cooks them and resells the next day, or the day after that, til sold, so I only buy them live. Have never had a problem, even take some home when we leave to enjoy while off island.
Good luck.
