LIVING THE DREAM
FYI
Moving to the USVI - St John (me ) was alot to handle, there are so many issues to consider. Its really paradise, but even in Paradise life is still life.
I was there there for 9 months and was heartbroken to leave , I have met so many people that I will always be friends with, had so many experiences and so much love . I had to leave not because of the lifestyle or anything that happened to me in a neg way , but family obligations. It;s not for everyone and you do miss home (mainland)
But on the flip side , my daily coffee was enjoyed while viewing the BVI's and sometimes a few horses in my yard!MY front yard was Coral Bay Harbour and my back yard was the mountain. I enjoyed many many days just savoring it all .
I would not and cannot trade it for anything that ever has happen to me and I do plan on doing it again.
Expect the unexpected and you wont be disappointed.
St. John is by far the most beautiful place to me . and I have a true love affair with her.
As far as kids are concerned I feel like its a great place for small kids , but when the teen years hit maybe not.
Any teen can be served at any bar at any time . and many other issues to consider (school ) is the most important.
I have alot of stories and exp to share with anyone who needs advice. most of it is very positive.
Good Luck to all who dare to follow the dream
Yolanda: I hope you will post your memories. It is important for people who want to live the dream to know that your time frame- less than a year- is the most likely scenario. That is why, IMHO, one should not sell everything and move, nor should they burn their bridges with employment back home. I hope all works out with your family obligations. Best wishes.

Your so right and If I can be of any assistance to anyone please ask away.
Not a day goes by that STJohn is not in my thoughts, it was profound for me .
Good luck to all . Yolanda

My husband and I honeymooned in St.John over 5 years ago, that's when we fell in love. 3 1/2 years later, we took our son, then 2 1/2. I was also pregnant with our daughter at the time... we had just found out we were having a girl and picked out her first name, AVA, on the flight down and were in search of her middle name during our vacation. We were eating breakfast at Tamarind Inn (best pineapple pancakes ever!) and looking at the map on the wall of ST. John and decided to have her middle name be "Klein"- after Klein Bay. We decided since we loved STJ and since it was the place I first felt her kick, she should have a name from there... Thus, we came up with Ava Klein. We wrote her name in the sand on that trip and took a photo of it which now hangs in her room along with a West Indian doll we also bought for her on that vacation.
Anyways, I met my husband in Arizona (where I am originally from) and we moved back to Kansas City, where he is from about 6 1/2 years ago. We knew we loved STJ on our honeymoon, but when we went back to visit, we wanted to live there. We both looked at each other on that 10 day trip and said "This feels like home". We rented a modest one bedroom for the 2nd trip down with our son, bought groceries, and had a fairly inexpensive vacation- rather than eating out a lot and staying at the Westin... So I am aware of grocery prices and availability. My husband is finishing up his teaching degree and has about a year left. So we are trying to plan to move a year or a year and a 1/2 from now. We just want to be sure we have our ducks in a row, especially financially. We, obviously, won't be able to buy a home, coming from the Midwest, but are hoping to find a decent 2 bedroom rental.
We are in our mid 30's and have our children to think about- we have looked into Coral Bay school and other options in STT... Very expensive, but somewhat comparable to daycare prices in the states. I love the diversity of the schools, Spanish classes, and sports... That is one of the main reasons I want to have them live down there.
If we go, I will more than likely wait tables. I am an HR manager in KC, and make pretty decent money, but realize that skill is paid much lower there. Do you have an idea what weekly income would be waiting tables? I did this for 7 years through college, etc, and am a PRO...
Thanks for letting me babble!
Hey Nikki,
Welcome to the "pull" of STJ 🙂 My husband and I moved from KC (the Plaza) to STJ a year ago. At the same time 3 other couples moved from KC - what's up with that !! Island Ed on this board to STT, Travelwoman and her husband to STX, us to STJ and Kellymac and her husband also to STT . We all had a pre-move get together (actually two of them) the first up north at Starbucks and then another on the Plaza at George Brett's - it was a fun evening. Anyway PM me if you want to chat (so we don't take up space on the board)
Later - and happy planning.
Pia
