Living Situation

I have been reading some posts, many of them by people who are moving to the islands and they do not have a place to stay. Many of them are going to look when they get there, where do many stay until they find a place. What if the hotel prices are very high and no rooms?

Perhaps you do as I did - get here in the "off season" and find a B&B that will give you an "off season" rate..............not inexpensive, but it allowed me the time to secure a place.

Actually I would also recommend to anyone looking for a place, once you have a general idea of where on the island you might wish to live, for whatever reason you choose it........and the message board is a great way to zero in on an area that might be suitable to your needs........it did mine.............rent a car and drive to the chosen area, visit some of the shops, resturants and don't forget the good old/young neighborhood/local bartender...and ask a simple question....."have you heard of anyone looking to rent a place nearby?"

Worked magic for me! I would not have found the great place I'm in had I not done this. It was recommended that I drive around and find posted "for rent" signs....but somehow with all the ups and downs and twists and turns....that didn't seem like such a hot idea....especially on the East End where I am.

Hello Peter -

Quite a few people move and have a reservation at a short term rental or a small hotel/b&b. Others that just move without any plans for accomodations the first couple of nights; I would think they have it in mind to stay at a small hotel and then search for an apartment the next day after getting in.

So folks stay in short term rentals, small hotels... its not likely that all hotels would be booked, but prices could be high, $65 to $350+ depending on hotel/resort.

I am flying down to St. Thomas to interview (Oct. 21 - Oct. 23) with the Virgin Island Environmental Service Company. For the position of Wastewater Plant Manager / Lead Operator. The position supplies a company truck and gas plus a cost of living allowance, two plane tickets a year, medical, relocation package, plus a salary to be negotiated (50K+) I currently live in CT but have also lived in Lancaster, PA and St. Petersburg, FL. I need some feed back as to how much more expensive it is to live on the Island of St. Thomas when I negotiate salary.

I am currently single and will also need a place to stay if I start work as soon as November 1st. What are my best options. I think I will ask the company to put me up for 2 wks to a month as part of the deal but I do not want to cost them too much money. All I need is a safe place nothing fancy.

Hello Stephen,

In the moving guide on this site there is a section calling Island Living - there is cost of utilities, gas, internet, grocery list with prices... also in the housing section there is a chart with avg. rents. I have head some say cost of living is comparable to NY?? Some say its 20% more here; but then you don't have the winter cloths, heating bills ect.

In 2 wks - month you should be able to look for a place. You could find a place in a week if you were available the whole week to make appointments and go check places out. The Island Trader has list of rentals in it with the tel. #, area that they are at, # of rooms ect. The Island Trader is a weekly papers. You might look in Northside or East End for a place to rent - West End is nice but might be far or further then the other two areas from your work site??

All the best.

Lived on east end 92-94 and will be arriving on island nov. 4. Would prefer to be on east end, but need a roommate. Do you know of anyone in need? Would like to work at Ritz in fine dining. Im in the food and beverage business. I opened Sugar Bay in 92. Sapphire would be heaven, but i lived right above secret harbor last time and loved it. Luckily I have a few friends still there if I need to crash for a night. Can pay rent NOV. 1st.See you soon. Mike F.
