Hi I am seriously considering relocating to St. Thomas with my 14 year old son, he is up for the move. I just have a few questions for any people who live on the islands:

1. How bad is the crime? Is it worse then they tell you, will I need high-tech security on my house?

2. Do locals make friends with continentals or continentals keep to themselves?

3. How bad is the povert on st. thomas

4. What is the Jewish community like

Peter,

Some people have high tech cameras surrounding their homes, most don't. A dog is a good thing to have in your yard - as people here have a fear of dogs. You can install an alarm if you like. Not to many people put up big fences but a few in private residential areas have a fence that requires residents to punch in a code - this is more because its a high end private area. I don't feel its a must to have high tech gadgets on the house, but not a bad idea depending on where your house is to have a dog or an alarm or motion detecting light just for added security.

Locals and continentals or non-locals make friends yes. Some people keep to themselves by choice. But particularly when families have children/ many parent-children activiites occur and people are involved together. Some activiities appear to be mostly local while others appear to be mostly long time continentals - but it is not a rule... and then other activities everyone participates in.

Jewish Community; visit their web site at

http://new.onepaper.com/synagogue/

there is a section for membership, tel and email so you can and find out more information. Info from the rabbi, choir, news, island and more - I think it will give you all the information you need about the congregation and community.
