I am planning on moving to St. Thomas in the fall of 2003 and thinking about purchasing a boat that I could live on. I was wondering if anyone had information on rental fees for slips. Also, I was wondering if anyone had an information on working in the sailing industry. I am a US Sailing Certified Instructor, and was the director of a sailing school for three years in Michigan. I also have had a lot of experience in racing on a variety of boats. Any suggestions on a career in that industry down there...I am interested in anything (chartering, selling, etc...) I appreciate your advise, thank you very much!

Hello Chad,

You'd certainly be able to find work in charters with your experience. You might consider starting a sailing school - I am not familiar with one existing, although the yatch club has a program for teaching kids sailing - you could work in that also and then investigate starting a school for everyone.... private lessons maybe.

As for slips - can't help with prices... I knew a couple folks who lived on sail boats.... one anchored off of the coast line by the university - he was a student there.... however I think he just did without any sort of permit as he was just out in the water and used his dingy to come in - perhaps he paid for a mooring - really not sure. Then knew a couple families that anchored off of Water Island facing Sub Base of St. Thomas, again probally paid for a mooring and services from the marina area at SubBase.... You might call the marinas listed on this site and see if they can help (go to the home page http://www.vinow.com and in the frequently asked information box there is a topic called marina/anchorages.... ) Also you could try the yellow pages http://www.viphonebook.com and look up marinas and inquire for information.... you shoul get a Settlers Handbook from http://www.vitraders.com to help plan your mover there is also boating information in there and number of boat community groups... If you are interested in selling boats you could look into that as well - but if sailing is your thing then perhaps captain or shipmate of a charter would be a good deal for you.... also some of these charters - the week long ones you live on as you are traveling out on charters - so thats another thing to consider if you work in this market. Otherwise there are day charter which you can do.

Good Luck --Islander

I have a 30 foot boat at the Crowm Bay Marina ( www.crownbaymarina.com ), and I pay .65 per foot per day in the off season, and .85 per foot per day in the busy season. 35 foot minimum.

Water, cable, elec at the slip.

I'm sure you know this. You need a OUPV lisence to operate a 6 pack charter in the USVI, and a master liscence with an STCW to go international to the BVI with a 6 pack charter .
