Living in the Islands

I've been reading a lot about the islands and am planning a trip there soon in order to see if it is the type of place that I might like to relocate to. From everything I've come across it has been suggested that if you plan on moving to the islands it is best to leave your large items at home rather than ship them. My question is whether there is a place on the islands to purchase things like hdtv big screen tv's or whether that typre of furniture should be shipped in? Thanks.

Hi.

I lived on St Thomas ( the Rock) for fifteen years. Stateside now for almost three. I always found plenty of what you are calling larger items in numerous stores. Here's a tip for you. In the Islands they come and they go. They also sell really nice used items, everything from furniture to TV's for next to nothing. There used to be a paper called Island Trader where you would find anything and everything, I think Dailey News owns it now. Some people love the Islands and some just can't fall into the rhythem. Unless you are sure that you are staying, it is a good idea to buy what you need there. Shipping is expensive, even though I sent my trailer very far in advance I still waited three weeks for it to arrive and slept on the floor, that is a hard tile floor, and I could have saved money by just buying what I needed there.

The Islands are not for everyone. There are wonderful people there and there are horrible people there, same as anywhere else. The Islanders have a saying.....Grinning faces hide bared teeth. Remember, you are in the historic homeland of the pirates! Good luck

Dear Kate, I too am looking to relocate to the islands. From the advice of others, they say to rent first before I buy. Who do I talk to about renting. Im sure this move is what I want to do because I love the water so much and also the warm weather. If I jump in feet first Im sure I will stay. Anything more you can give me would be appreciated.

You can talk to a real estate agent about renting, however that is not how most do it. Renting an apartment in the USVI is a matter of getting the Island Trader and/or Daily News and looking up the listings for apartments. Figure out which area you want to live in, Island Trader has more listings and has the listings generally sorted by location. Call the numbers of the apartments based on the descriptions given that you might be interested in, and call. Ask question that you have, rent? are electricity included? water included? parking?? Then set up a time and day to go see the place. Visit several until you find one you like and then go from there.

Good Luck.

Hello,

I got in contact with some electronically inclined friends 🙂 to inquire about the HDTV, and I was told that no one in the USVI offers HD television. There is no signal for it, so of course you could bring the TV with you so that you have the big screen however the broadcast will be regular cable or satalite not HD. And there is no one that sells HD tvs here on island (since the service is not avialable).

You can get TVs here, big TV's just not HD big screen tvs or the service.
