Living in St. John
Hello! I have a chance to move to St. John with a job that is decent. Would like to know more about where to rent, will have my fiance with me and 3 dogs. Also thinking of selling SUV before moving but wonder about transportation on the island. Is there a vet? How difficult is it to get to St. Thomas to the Kmart? I have visited St. Thomas and Tortola but not St. John.
Any info about living on the island is appreciated on any subject. Thank you!

I found Cruz Bay Canines, Cats and Critters (340) 693-7780 in the Yellow Pages. Definitely recommend selling your SUV at home and buying something once on island. You'll probably find that the type of vehicle you drive at home is just a bit too 'nice' for your needs here. That means that you can save yourself quite a bit of money (and hassles) on shipping. Pick up something once here that suits your needs. Once you are here, you'll have a better idea of what your 'needs' really are. As far as getting to K-Mart....hop on the Ferry in Cruz Bay to Red Hook and take a cab or Safari to Tutu. Or, you could take the Ferry to Charlotte Amalie and walk to the little K-mart. Or, you could take the car ferry over into Red Hook, drive to Big K-Mart, load up with LOTS of stuff, and come back. This is the preferred method, as you have to do it less often. Then, you can also go to Cost-U-Less, PriceSmart, etc. As far as where to rent...well, someone on STJ will have to help you out with that one...I live on STT. Anyone?
Marty,
Thank you for the great info on getting to KMART! I may have 2 german shepherds and a 30 lb mix and we go through lots of dog food!!! Think we will be doing lots of walks in the national park. Have a great week! atlgirl
I can tell you right now that three dogs are going to be a major problem as in close to impossible.
Sorry Marty, love you dearly and know you were trying to help but you know very well that finding a place with ONE pooch is really hard and THREE is close to totally impossible, and that not only goes for STJ but STT and STX.
If the job offer is really good then maybe the future employer can hook you up with a 3-dog-friendly living situation? If the future employer has no interest in making your relocation easy then seriously think about the ramifications!
Cheers dears!
We lived on St. John for awhile before coming back to st. thomas. I know you said you've been to St. Thomas, but you may want to make a PMV to St. John before moving there. It's more of a party atmosphere, with groceries a lot higher than st. Thomas, and being a small town there's a lot more drama that goes on that's harder not to hear about. It was just to small for us and the wrong atomsphere. It was cute and we loved the fact that you could walk every where (i've never been in such great shape in my life...lol). But if you decided to drive there was no where to park. It is beautiful and the beaches are better there. oh, and really good konch fritters off the people ferry. There is a sweet retriever that is owned by a man who works there. His fur is shaved into a mohawk, and he is named Tigger. Just as cute as can be. He'll follow you around the beach front and play if your interested.
Good luck!!!
STT Res,
Well, who says you gotta declare that you have 3?!? haha! Just ask if they accept dogs, sign the lease and hope for the best! Haha! J/K! Actually, the reason I stayed away from mentioning anything about places to stay was precicely BECAUSE of the 3 pooches! Haha! Thanks for calling me on it, Res!
