Which island?
Well I will be working on St. thomas but I do not now where i should live if it would be best for me to live there or one of the other islands.
Stacey,
Where are you working? Perhaps an area close to work would do? If you are working on St. Thomas the only options are to live on St. Thomas, live on St. John and commute or live on Water Island and commute. Those options are entirely up to you. If you live on St. John regular ferries exist, rent is more costly and apartments less avialable but the island is quiet and lovely. Water Island residents can take the ferry which has set times and not as frequent as the St. John ferry and that island has no commerce on it so residents almost exist like they are on a private island and depend on St. Thomas for groceries, gas ect. On St. Thomas you have lots of options for areas to live in, whether its west end, east end, north side, island is more developed and larger then the other two mentioned... depends on what you want.
Are you bringing a car or will you buy a car? Depending on where you are working, if you will have a car - suggestions can be made for apartments close to work or if you have a car then it matters less.

I have not decided if I will bring my car yet or if I should bring it. I am not sure of shipping cost. I would hope to be able to walk or ride a bike to work and maybe take a bus to tour the island. Right now I am just trying to figure out how easy it will be to move from here. I am not familar with any of the island ways, so anything you can tell me will help. thanks
Stacey,
I suppose I misunderstood what you meant by "working on St. Thomas" I thought you had a job lined up already. In any case.
Walking is not really an option here, the island is not flat its hilly with mountain ridges running through the middle basically, roads curve and twist around the mountainsides. Some people hitch hike but its not the suggested mode of transportation unless you make friends with someone who heads your same direction daily and you catch a ride with them. We aren't hitch hiker friendly here for the most part. A bike is only suggested if you are living and working is one of the few flatter areas say UVI - Nisky or Red Hook and thats about it. Next to no-one depends on a bike for transporation here - I knew one guy who biked everywhere - he was a athlete and did the bike part of triathlon races. You can rely a the public bus and $1 safaris if you work and live along the routes they run on which is generally the densly populated residential areas and commerical areas... they do not go every where on island or to the beaches or attractions in northside ect. So for island touring you will be using taxi service or friends you make can show you around. So its either a car or you work and live along the bus routes.
Ask the questions you have so you can figure out what is feasiable and make your moving plans.

I do have a job lined up. so are you aware what the cost is of shipping a car or should I buy over there. would I have to adjust my car any to get it there? Also how hard is it to find an aptartment at a resonale rate in a safe location.
