Live Messenger Webcam Test
Howdy all.
Anybody down there set up with a webcam and Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger (with video) account?
I'd like to do a quick videochat with you to confirm the speed and quality of the connection between Ohio and the VI (STX in particular but STT will be ok too). Such a connection will be an important way for us to do some business and keep track of loved ones when we finally make the move down your way.
FYI....If you want details on how to do free videochat, post here. It's pretty easy. I use it nearly every day to stay in touch with two of my college kids.
So I take it that making video calls over the internet isn't common down that way 🙂
It'll never happen at my house. I'd hate to have to put on makeup, etc. to play on the computer. 😉
I hear you. That's why it's good that the quality ain't pristine. A bit grainy.
But it's awesome to see your college kids' faces when you miss them!
Oh, I'm sure. Great thing for folks here who are away from their families on the Mainland or elsewhere. I bet there are others down here that do the webcam thing so I hope they show up on this thread.
Neil,
I really would like to help you out, but I still have a VCR that the time still flashes. 12:00,12:00 etc. I just figured out how to get a picture from the computer to the printer. Lots of luck, by the time I catch up to you, everything will probably be touch and smell.
Neil,
My husband works for an internet provider on island, but we can't help you with the video part. I will tell you though that getting phone service thru the internet is going to be more reliable than a land line and/or cell phone. Cell service works great in some areas and spotty in others. We literally went house hunting based on whether or not we could get internet service and good cell service. Your internet speeds will vary through out the day, but during the school year the night time service is sloooooooowwwwww. The base stations get overloaded and everyone is online. My husband said that they have finally been able to get internet pricing comparable to stateside, but they are few years off from getting consistent high speed internet comparable to stateside. That is all aside from the fact that the current goes out on a regular basis. But as you can see, many are able to get online and post on message boards quite often, so email may be your most consistent and reliable way to stay in touch.

Neil, We use skype to run our business and talk to our family members. We are on it daily and it works well on STX. We also talk to family members in Europe.
Thanks folks for the info. Great advice and comfort.
Instructions for fixing Lizard's blinking VCR clock:
1. Cut a 2" piece of electrical tape.
2. Apply tape over blinking lights.
3. Resume nap.
Thanks for the tip Neil. I'll start on that task right after my nap this coming December.LOL
If you want to test the webcam let me know. I have a 1 year old daughter who we put on the webcam for off island grandparents to view. It works pretty well.
